Picking the best asparagus
The freshest asparagus stalks are firm, usually bright green stems, with a little bit of white at the bottom.
You’ll want to make sure that the stalks are not limp and the tops of the spears are not too dark or wrinkled. You’ll want to use the asparagus quickly – it only stores well for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.
How to make broiled asparagus
Set your oven to high broil (you’ll want to make sure that the rack is at the top of the oven). Trim the ends of the asparagus by cutting them off or snapping them off.
Spread asparagus on a baking sheet. We usually line it with aluminum foil to make for an easier clean up.
Drizzle olive oil over the asparagus, then shake garlic salt over the top.
With your hands, roll and toss the asparagus so each piece is covered evenly with the oil and salt. Spread asparagus on the sheet evenly so that they are not overlapping.
Broil for 5-6 minutes if you have thinner stalks, 7-8 minutes if you have thicker stalks.
What to serve with this asparagus
This asparagus makes a great side dish for any number of main dishes – but here are some of our favorites:
- Juicy Marinated Steak and Potatoes
- Copycat Chicken Madeira
- Slow Cooker Italian Chicken (or anything other pasta – like this asparagus fettuccine)

I love asparagus and usually boil mine, but I've never thought to broil it. How delicious that sounds. By the way, I made your No-Bake Peanut Butter Bars last week (with a little twist), then revamped it and turned it into Muddy Buddy covered truffles. I loved them both ways.
