What is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that can develop during pregnancy in women who don’t already have diabetes. Gestational diabetes is not caused by a lack of insulin. It causes a condition referred to as insulin resistance which means other hormones produced during pregnancy that can make insulin less effective. When you have a gestational diabetes diagnosis and you are concerned with your blood glucose levels, finding healthy breakfast options can be tricky. 

Here’s some good news! There are a bunch of gestational diabetes breakfast ideas out there! *Talking to your healthcare provider before starting a new gestational diabetes meal plan is always a good choice.*

We promise your first meal of the day can still include some traditional breakfast foods you know and love.  

High-fiber, whole grains (complex carbohydrates) and healthy fats are healthy choices. Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, peanut butter, fresh fruit, and extra protein (hello, scrambled eggs!) are always a great addition to your morning meal. Or try adding some chia seeds to up your grams of fiber. This will start your day off right and allow you to have the energy levels you need for the rest of the day.
