Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

These Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes are simple and taste absolutely amazing. If you are in a dinner rut, this is the perfect recipe to get you out. It tastes nothing like a regular sloppy joe, and I promise this recipe will become a family favorite.

This meal is so easy to make and you only dirty one pan.  Our family loves this version of sloppy joes so much more than the original, but you’ll have to be the judge of that.
It’s quick, inexpensive, easy, and full of way more flavor than your average sloppy joe. It also has cheese on it, which was a huge selling point for me.
I even went as far to toast the buns, and it made all the difference with this recipe.
If you are in a dinner rut, this recipe is the perfect way out. It is so yummy and even my picky eaters gobbled it right up.

what cheese could I use instead of provolone?

My husband and I love provolone because it isn’t too strong, and adds the perfect amount of texture. If you don’t love provolone, you could easily replace it with another cheese.

Here are a few different cheeses that would taste amazing on this sandwich, that we would definitely recommend:

  • Feta Cheese ( I love feta cheese and would put it on everything if I could. Maybe not the best for kids, but if you love Feta cheese, you will love it on this sandwich).
  • Swiss Cheese
  • Pepper Jack Cheese
  • Cheddar Cheese (not the most recommended for this sandwich, because the flavor pairs a little differently with the meat, but if it’s all you have on hand, it will still taste delicious. A marbled cheese like a Colby Jack wold also work great).
  • Mozzarella Cheese

Really you could use any of your favorite cheese, but these are the ones we definitely recommend.

what could i use in place of the steak sauce?

This recipe calls for steak sauce. We usually just use A1, because we always have it on hand, and it tastes amazing in this recipe.

However if you don’t have steak sauce and don’t want to invest (it’s a very small, less than $3 investment), you can easily use something else you have on hand. Here is what we recommend:

Steak sauce is compiled of:

  • ketchup
  • soy sauce
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • onion powder
  • hot sauce
  • vinegar
  • garlic powder

You could easily make your own, or you could just use a few of these ingredients to fill in. I am not sure on the exact measurements of each, but a rough combination would make a delicious steak sauce or steak sauce substitute

(I would go easy on the Worcestershire sauce however. It is a little on the powerful side.)

Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes Recipe

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion (diced)
  • 1 green bell pepper (diced)
  • 1 (8 ounce) package fresh sliced mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup steak sauce
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 8 slices provolone cheese
  • 8 hamburger buns or rolls


  1. Preheat broiler to low.
  2. In large skillet over medium-high heat brown the ground beef about 5-6 minutes.
  3. Add the onion, green pepper, and mushrooms and cook another 3-4 minutes, until they start to get tender.
  4. Stir in the steak sauce and beef stock, season with salt and pepper.
  5. Bring up to a low boil and cook for about 2 minutes.
  6. Open buns and place on a baking sheet.
  7. Place a slice of cheese on the top half of each bun and put pan in the broiler.
  8. Broil for 1-2 minutes, or until cheese is melted and buns are golden brown.
  9. Place a scoopful of the meat on the bottom half of the bun, drizzle with additional steak sauce and place cheesy bun on top.

    I just cooked the liquid off, but I added garlic powder to it so the taste of the steak sauce wouldn't be so overpowering and I used a little less steak sauce. I'm going to try the teriyaki idea next time. Great recipe.
  2. I am making this tonight for dinner but going to cut down on mushrooms and bell peppers.Me and my oldest are the only ones who like mushrooms but I love bell peppers but no one else does.I am making up a pasta side to go with it.Hopeing it turns out to be really good.

    Made this for dinner tonight. Everyone loved it. Used mozzarella instead of provolone cause that's what I had. Even my picky son liked it. Added some garlic. Only had bold and spicy A1 so used less and added in some soy sauce for flavor. Thanks for sharing!!! Will be going in the family likes it cookbook. :D

    Made this exactly as recipe states and my meat was soupy as well. I ended up draining liquid off and cooking it down. I would cut the broth amount at least in half. I wonder why you've never had that problem? Still yummy though! Easy way to have a philly!
  5. I made this last night for my family and it was absolutely Delicious. Thank you for sharing :) I did add a tablespoon more of the A1 sauce and reduced the beef both in the pan till most of it reduced down 90%....yummy!!! We got bored of sloppy joe's years ago and this is our replacement now and oh my this is WAY better :)

    I made this tonight for dinner and it was absolutely delicious. We are trying to watch our carb intake so we used lettuce to wrap the filling instead of a bun and it was wonderful. I will be making this again for sure and it was so quick and easy. Love it !!!!!

    I made this tonight. YUM-A-NUMMA!!! I used everything but the steak sauce (didn't have it & didn't miss it). I just cooked everything in a cast-iron skillet as directed, turned off the heat, put white American cheese on it & covered it 'til the cheese melted (just like I do with my regular Phillys). Put it on standard burger buns with a light spread of mayo (like I do with my regular Phillys). AWESOME!!! Tasted like a Philly but SO much easier! I may try a better bread, next time... It's SO totally worth it!!!
