My new favorite midnight snack only takes about 1 minute to make and tastes amazing. This is the perfect one-serving dessert to satisfy your sweet tooth.
We’ve been a big fan of mug cakes (have you tried this chocolate chip peanut butter mug cake?), but when we saw you could make a cookie in a mug, we were ALL over that.
Especially because It’s midterm week for us two youngest sisters. That means that all junk food is acceptable, at any time of day.
Recipe Ingredient Notes
To make Chocolate Chip Mug Cookie, you will need the following ingredients:
- Butter
- Egg Yolk
- Brown Sugar
- Sugar
- Salt
- Vanilla Extract
- Flour
- Handful of chocolate chips, (as many or as little as you would like)
Equipment Needed
For this recipe, you only need a few simple kitchen tools. We recommend using the following equipment:
How to make Chocolate Chip Mug Cookie
- Place all ingredients into microwave safe mug.
- Stir ingredients until completely mixed.
- Microwave on high for 50 seconds to 1 minute.
- Top with your favorite ice cream, whipped cream, or chocolate sauce, and enjoy!
Tips for “baking” mug desserts:
- Don’t use a whole egg for one cake. It’s too much egg to use in just one mug cake, so we recommend using just the yoke. If you want to double the recipe, we would recommend whisking one whole large egg, and splitting it evenly between two cups (that way you don’t have to waste two egg whites).
- It doesn’t have to be a mug. The name “mug cake” mostly just references that it CAN be made in one mug, not that it HAS to be. You can use anything that is microwaveable – ramekins, jars, tupperware, cups, etc.
- Don’t fill it more than half full. You can use any microwave-safe container (see #2), BUT make sure you don’t fill it more than halfway. The mixture needs room to expand (about double the size). If the container isn’t big enough, you’ll end up with a big microwave mess.
- Don’t overcook. This recipe calls for baking the mug cookie for 50 seconds to 1 minute. Start at 50 seconds, test for doneness, and then cook at additional 10 second intervals as needed. (Because it isn’t actually baked, the sugars won’t caramelize and it will be a lot lighter in color when it’s finished – don’t let it fool you into thinking it’s not done!)
Additions or Substitutions for your mug cookie:
While we think this chocolate chip cookie mug recipe is pretty tasty as-is, you could also try these variations to change it up:
- M&Ms in place of chocolate chips
- Frozen yogurt on top
- Topped with whipped cream and berries
- Whole wheat flour for white flour
- A dollop of Nutella in place of chocolate chips
- Sprinkles and white chocolate chips for a “funfetti” cookie

Mmm, what about the chocolate chips?
This looks so good! Can’t wait to try it out 🙂
I love this! & I love all of your posts!( :
Chocolate chips are listed on the ingredients. Just a nice handful, more or less depending on how big of a chocolate chip lover you are. The first part of the directions says to add all of the ingredients into the mug! Hope this helps!
In the directions it says to add all of the ingredients into the mug – that includes the chocolate chips!
GAH!!!!!!!! I stumbled across this recipe tonight (TOTAL lover of all in-a-mug recipes) and thought “HA! I’m a college student upon the precipice of finals (week after next… **cue stress!!!**)” so I made it….. once…. twice….. YUM!!!!!!!!! SCORE!!! I made the cookie with whole wheat flour the first time, and normal white the second; both great, but the white was better 😉 You are my official hero tonight 😀 This recipe is a total winner! Will go great with a cup of coffee while I study for finals this week 🙂
I have never had Mug Recipes turn out worth eating…This one is another one…Just throw this one in the trash…Followed it just at printed…Not worth eating or making…or rating.
Terrible! Followed directions and it was horrible! Skip this one!
Terrible!! Too much flour in this recipe.
made these with my kids tonight! they loved them! quick and fun dessert.
This was super gross ?
Unfortunately this didn’t turn out for me. It was such a crumbly mix and lead to a inedible crumbling “cookie”. Not in a good way! It was gross. It’s because the mixture is too dry too with too much flour and not enough moisture. Would not make it again. I’m disappointed ☹️
The cookie part didn’t really taste like anything. It doesn’t have that characteristic choco chip cookie flavor. The mixture was fine, sort of muffin texture.
I loved this recipe, so easy! Made as written, came out great!
