These cookies are so easy to make using a strawberry cake mix. The cream cheese frosting takes them over the top. It’s the perfect dessert for your special Valentine.
Growing up, one of my favorite things, was coming home from school to our mom’s Homemade Oreo’s. They are a simple recipe made from a cake mix, that taste absolutely amazing. Way better than a real Oreo.
They are so soft, and the icing in the middle is so good.
In honor of Valentine’s Day, I decided to kick things up a notch and make these into strawberry Oreo’s with cream cheese frosting.
I have to say, I was very pleased and at first bite, it was like I had died and gone to heaven.
If you are looking for a simple and delicious Valentine’s Day recipe, I highly recommend these.
what other cake mixes could I use with this recipe?
The thing I really love about this recipe, is you could make these cookies using any flavor of cake mix. You can switch up the frosting as well, or even buy canned frosting at the store, or from the bakery.
We are all about saving time, and these cookies are quick, delicious, and full of yummy cake flavor.
Here are a few of our favorite cake flavor to try with this recipe:
- vanilla or white (with chocolate frosting)
- lemon cake
- funfetti (we like the funfetti frosting with them too)
- cherry chip
- chocolate (we prefer devils food cake)
- chocolate with German cake coconut frosting.

Just a question. I’m interested in making these, and I LOVE cream cheese, but for those who might not like cream cheese frosting, do you happen to have alternative suggestions for the filling? Would regular store bought frosting work? Just curious!
What kind of shortening did you use? These look lucious and want to make them. I like cake mix cookies, too.
You have a great web site. Thanks!
Pretty cookies! And yummy too. 🙂
These look like fun!
@Dianne,
I just used regular vegetable shortening. Thanks!
@Renee,
I think vanilla store bought frosting would be great or here is a link to homemade frosting that would be good, too.
Oh My! Yummo! These look too delicious! I may have to make these next weekend for my SundaySchool class…this goes beyond a little bribery tho, they had better be soo good! 😉
We are hosting our first Kitchen Fun and Crafty link party next Friday and would love for you to share this! Feel free to stop by and grab a party button! http://kitchenfunwithmy3sons.blogspot.com/
I feel silly but I am ready to make these and am thinking – do I include the ingredients on the cake mix box too – or just the eggs and shortening?
Uhhh, that gooey icing totally grabbed me-these look amazing:) I would love it if you stopped by to share this at my linky party going on right now:)

Drooling over here !!! I so need to try these.
Way way cute idea! If I had a strawberry cake mix, I would make these tonight.
I followed the recipe exactly and my batter was way too soft and gooey to form into balls! Has anyone else actually tried following this recipe? Did I do something wrong??? Too bad, it looked good.
These look great! I wanted to let you know that I featured this in my “What I Bookmarked This Week” post – stop by and see!

@riabeth,
Just use the cake mix, eggs and shortening. You can ignore what is on the box! 🙂
Love this!

I used butter instead of shortening. My batter was very gooey and sticky, but I just used plenty of flour on my hands. However, I ended up with half my frosting left over! Unless you want tons of frosting in your cookies, halve that part of the recipe!
Just tried these (found them on pinterest) and they are delicious! Thanks for the idea!! I did put a little less shortening, but added a tablespoon or so of milk. Yum!
such a hit at work!
I just made these and they are so cute! I’m wondering, because the frosting is made with butter and cheese do I have to refrigerate the cookies?
@Erika,
I haven’t eve kept them in the fridge so they’ll be okay either way!
Since I had leftover frosting from my original bath, I decided to make chocolate ones. I used devil’s food cake mix, since that’s what I already had. At first, I wasn’t sure how they would turn out. I ended up cooking the balls for 11 minutes at 350, then flattening them out right after they came out of the oven. They ended up firming up better than the strawberry ones which made it easier to spread the frosting, but they are still super soft when you eat them. They ended up being a winner!
they look great! question – can i use butter or oil instead of the shortening?
Oil would make a really flat cookie. You could try butter just at room temperature, don’t melt it. Shortening works the best, just not the healthiest option. Hope this helps. -The Six Sisters
Love it! I love that they are pink, too!
Your photo so gorgeous – it made me drool…these look delish!
I used carrot cake mix not as good as the strawberry..u followed the recipe exact fir the strawberry and mine looked excatly like the picture..

I’m not big on Valentines day (maybe because my birthday is so close?) but these are getting me excited! Hooray for Pinterest. 🙂
I am finding that 8 minutes is definitely not enough time for these to bake through. I’m making them now and have to put them back in the oven for the third time for a total of at least 15 minutes.
Just got done making these, and you could definitely cut the 4 cups of sugar in the frosting to two! Yowza super-sweet, but gooooood!
These were delicious! I made them this past Valentine’s Day for my boyfriend and also ended up taking a batch in to work. My co-workers loved them and my boyfriend thought they were amazing!!!! Definitely a winner 🙂
Nice recipe! I tried it with a devils food cake mix. I only used a half cup of shortening, and they came out just fine. I also cut the filling recipe in half and had plenty leftover.
These were disgusting with all that shortening. I wasted the ingredients. Very disappointed.
Made these for Valentine’s Day & they were fantastic! Would definitely cut the filling recipe in half…a lot leftover after all the cookies were done. Great recipe…will use it again!
I use oil in mine and they still turn out great! But I usually do 2 cake mixes, 4 eggs, 1/2cup flour and 1cup oil and they are still fluffy…I also added some strawberry koolaid to the frosting and that was really good too!
I don’t get it. They look delicious but what, exactly, is the Oreo part?
We have a homemade Oreo cookie recipe that is just like this but uses a devils food cake mix. They are a popular recipe and you can make the Oreos using all flavors of cake mix. https://www.sixsistersstuff.com/2013/01/easy-homemade-oreos-recipe.html
My kids love these!
As a side note, if you double the recipe you don’t need to double the frosting. I have so much left!
