I know you are thinking Moon Pies are usually smothered in chocolate but my girls just kept saying moon pies… so that is what we are calling them Ha Ha.
These are more of whoopie pies than anything, but they are so yummy and my girls refused to call them anything but moon pies. So we are rolling with it, and these moon pies will blow your mind they are so good.
You could also turn them into real moon pies and dip them in chocolate.

To make Moon Pies (Whoopie Pies), you will need the following ingredients:

- Devils Food Cake Mix
- Water
- Vegetable Oil
- Eggs
- Vanilla
- Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix
Marshmallow Frosting
- Butter, softened
- Vanilla
- Powdered Sugar, add more powdered sugar if needed
- Marshmallow Creme
- Sprinkles

How to make Moon Pies (Whoopie Pies)
- Heat oven to 350℉. Cover baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix cake mix, oil, water, eggs, vanilla, and pudding mix until smooth – about 2 minutes.
- Spoon rounded scoops of dough onto parchment paper about 2 inches apart. Cook for 10-11 minutes. You should get about 36 cookies which will yield about 18 whoopie or moon pies.
- Let set on baking sheet for about 1-2 minutes before removing from cookie sheet. Let cool completely.
Storing and Other Tips
If you manage to not eat the whole tray of cookies immediately, these Moon Pies (Whoopie Pies) store well. Once cookies have completely cooled, here is how you can store them:
- Counter: Store in an airtight container in a single layer for up to 4 days at room temperature. If you want to try and get the cookies to last even longer without becoming crumbly cookies, add a slice of bread into the container of cookies. The bread will give the cookies something to draw moisture from.
- Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container in a single layer for up to 7 days in a refrigerator.
Will any cake mix work for this recipe?
For this recipe, we call for devils food cake mix. Really any chocolate cake mix would taste delicious, with this recipe. Chocolate Fudge cake mix would taste delicious with these moon pies.
Marshmallow Frosting:
Did you know that most Moon Pies (Whoopie Pies) are filled with a smooth and creamy Marshmallow frosting?
We have the best recipe as a filling. But you could always fill them with a cream cheese buttercream frosting if that’s what your family prefers.
If you are looking for a recipe shortcut, you could also used pre-made or canned frosting. We recommend making the marshmallow frosting, but if you are in a hurry, and don’t have time to make your own frosting, you could easily use pre-made.
You could shake things up and use a different flavor, like chocolate, cherry, Funfetti, strawberry, German chocolate, etc.

- ⅓ cup sprinkles

- Roll the sides of the Whoopie Pies in the sprinkles so the sprinkles adhere to the frosting.
