Is teriyaki marinade the same thing as teriyaki sauce?
For this recipe, we call for teriyaki sauce. A lot of the teriyaki sauces can be a little more runny, but we used a thicker sauce (probably has more sugar, but it did have less sodium).
Most teriyaki marinades are really thin, and a water like substance.
We recommend using the thicker teriyaki sauce, and not the marinade for the best results.
It will help your chicken taste less salty, and more sweet.
What could I replace the teriyaki sauce with?
If you aren’t a huge teriyaki sauce fan, you could use really any other sauce you like. Here are a few we highly recommend that would still taste amazing with the chicken and pineapple combo:
- Barbecue Sauce (we like to use a honey bbq sauce, or a brown sugar one. The sweeter ones taste better with the pineapple).
- Sweet Chili Sauce
- Honey Mustard Sauce
- You Could also Make Your Own Teriyaki Sauce.

I recently found your awesome blog via Pinterest! I just tried this recipe out tonight and oh man, was it good! Thank you so much for posting it! I did a write up of it in my blog! I will def be trying some of your other slow cooker recipes soon! Thanks again, and keep up the great work!!!
This looks delicious! I’ve been trying to find some good new crock pot recipes for this time of year…I think we will have to give this one a try!
PS – I’m one of 6, too! 4 girls and 2 boys! So much fun to be from a big family!
If I only use 3 chicken breasts should I not cook it as long?
I made this and did not like it. It was extremely salty with the two sauces. I also have a large crock pot, so the sauce only came up halfway on the chicken, so the tops came out kind of rubbery.
This is cooking in my crockpot now – i put yellow, orange and red peppers in it, a sweet onion and some water chestnuts in it… it smells so good and i’m looking forward to eating it later! Making some Jasmine rice with it — my mouth is watering!
Had this for dinner tonight and it was received with rave reviews! SO yummy! Thank you for sharing!!
LOVED this! will be sure to keep it in rotation 🙂 thanks, girls!
Made this today – it’s good just too salty, next time I’d only use 1/2 cup soy and 1/2 cup water. But other than that, it was real tasty.
Can you cook on low 8-10 hours?
Hi Jessica!
I have never cooked it that long, so I am not sure if it would dry out too much. I think you could definitely do it for about 6 hours on low? If you tried to do it longer and it came out really dry, just shred the meat and put it back in the sauce before serving so it absorbs some of the liquid.
I had assumed I could cook this on low so it’s already in my crockpot. Now I’m reading your reviews and worried it will be in too long, but I will let you know. I will have the benefit of stirring it during the day though. I’m sure it will be great! My husband is super excited about this one…
One tip for the posters who said it was too salty is to find low-sodium soy sauce. We are low-sodium over here, and what a difference it makes.
Update: I cooked it on low for 8 hours and it turned out great. We poured the extra juices over our rice as well. I will say that it’s a bit salty for my taste, but we like our teriyaki very sweet. I will be doing this again today; I will change it to 1/4 cup soy sauce and 1 cup teriyaki to serve my families preferences better. Thank you so so much for posting this.

Normally I love you recipes, but this was awful. Seriously could not even choke down more than one bite. WAY too salty. Such a waste of 4 chicken breasts…
I was kinds nervous about this recipe for 2 reasons. First of all I have a very picky husband & I mean picky! Then some of the reviews weren’t so good but I decided to try it anyway. That’s the only way to find out & I’m glad I did!! We loved it,even mister picky pants! I think he liked it better than I did which was shocking!!! I think tomorrow we’re going to drain the juice & try the chicken on a bun,I think it’ll be good that way too! So glad I found this recipe!
I used both low-sodium soy sauce & low-sodium teriyaki sauce, & still found it to be too salty. The pineapples esp. soaked up way too much salty flavor. I love your teriyaki chicken recipe for the slow-cooker, so I think I’ll stick with that!
i think the reason why some people found this too salty is because they used the teriyaki marinade instead of the glaze. i made this mistake the first time and wow was it salty. i caught on from a different recipe that made it clear to use the glaze and not the marinade. so i tried this recipe once more with the glaze and it was delicious 🙂
i’m one of seven – 5 girls two boys!! 😀
I make this ALL of the time but this is what I use (much easier with less ingredients but still absolutely delicious!): six frozen boneless chicken tenderloins, an entire bottle of Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce (doesn’t really matter the size), and an entire can of pineapple chunks (I pour all of the juice in there, not just half). I cook mine on high for 3 hours. Just a friendly tip! 😉
We love to hear other versions of the recipe. Thanks so much for your recipe. Sounds delicious. -The Six Sisters
Do you use the thicker Teriyaki sauce or the thin (consistency of soy sauce)?
We use the thicker Teriyaki sauce.
I made this today and also found it to be ridiculously salty. My daughters could not eat it and my husband and I added a lot of honey to try to counteract the salt. I do plan on trying it again with half the soy and teriyaki and all the pineapple juice.
Made this today but used honey bbq sauce instead of soy and teriyaki sauce. Yum! No leftovers!!
