Slow Cooker Sesame Beef

With a five-year-old and a three-year-old and a baby that is going to be born any day, my life is pretty crazy right now. I can only imagine how busy I will be when they are teenagers! Right now I am just taking life one day at a time . . . and one dinner at a time!

I am still madly in love with my slow cooker. In fact, heaven knows that my family would only eat one or two meals a week if it weren’t for my slow cooker. This recipe was so simple to throw together and the whole family loved it- that’s when you know it’s a keeper. 🙂

  • 1½ lbs. boneless beef chuck roast, sliced into thin strips
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup oyster sauce*
  • 1 pound fresh or frozen broccoli florets
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 Tablespoons cornstarch
  • Cooked rice (optional)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish)

  1. In slow-cooker, arrange beef strips; pour beef broth and oyster sauce over the beef.
  2. Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours or until beef is very tender.
  3. If using fresh broccoli, place broccoli in microwave-safe bowl with 1/4 cup water. Microwave 4 to 5 minutes, until broccoli is tender. If using frozen broccoli, follow cooking directions on packaging.
  4. In a cup, combine cornstarch and 2 tablespoons cooking liquid; stir until smooth.
  5. Add to slow-cooker and stir well to combine. Drain the broccoli and stir into the slow-cooker. Cook uncovered on HIGH for about 15 minutes or until sauce is thickened. Serve over hot, cooked rice and garnish with sesame seeds.
  6. *I had never purchased oyster sauce before making this, but I found it on the Asian aisle at my local grocery store, right by the teriyaki sauces. It was only about $2 and has such an amazing taste that totally makes this dish! I don't know what else you could use as a substitute . . . I highly recommend just trying it. 🙂

  1. I'm planning on making this tomorrow, but I have a question. Has anyone made this and steamed their broccoli the day before? I work Mondays until 6, then pick up the baby at my mom's, so by the time I get home it's 7. Ideally, I'd like to just be able to stir in the cornstarch mixture, throw in the already-steamed broccoli, and sit down to eat by 7:20. Do you think cooking the broc the day before would take away from the dish in any way?
  2. Tried this tonight and my daughter proclaimed "this is the first thing you have cooked that I have liked" - not a great review for me it has to be said! but a slow cooker recipe my refusenik 5 year old will eat is good for me! Thanks for sharing :)
  3. I was so excited to try this meal. I bought the meat at my local Earth Fair grocer so I would be sure to start with the best possible ingredient. The dish tasted good but the smell was god awful! My husband and I stuck through with it because of the cost and taste but our 18 year old son couldn't get past it. I spent over $15.00 on the meat, I would highly recommend skipping this recipe. Please don't remove posts that don't rave about your recipes. • Tend to agree with Tonya here. Will try other recipes on your site, but agree that bad reviews should be allowed as long as they are civil. Our version of this dish was extremely pungent and unpleasant. The taste wasn't all that bad, but we too couldn't get past the strong smell and went out for dinner instead.
