Simple Moon Pies Recipe (aka Whoopie Pies)

These Simple moon pies are easy to make and full of flavor. They are the perfect dessert for any occasion, and come together in a matter of minutes.

I know you are thinking Moon Pies are usually smothered in chocolate but my girls just kept saying moon pies… so that is what we are calling them Ha Ha.
My oldest loved rolling the icing in frosting- but she loved eating them even more.
These are more of whoopie pies than anything, but they are so yummy and my girls refused to call them anything but moon pies. So we are rolling with it, and these moon pies will blow your mind they are so good.
You could also turn them into real moon pies and dip them in chocolate.

will any cake mix work for this recipe?

For this recipe, we call for devils food cake mix. Really any chocolate cake mix would taste delicious, with this recipe. Most chocolate cake mixes, require the same ingredients, to make the cake.

In the directions, it explains to add the eggs, oil, and water as directed in the instructions on the cake mix box. However, be sure, (no matter what the box says) to only add 3/4 cup of water.

Add the eggs and oil as directed, but only add 3/4 cup of water to the cake mix, even if the box tells you to add less than that, just add the 3/4 cup of water.

can i add less powdered sugar?

For this recipe, we call for 4 cups of powdered sugar. This may seem like a lot, but there are so many other ingredients in the frosting as well. The frosting also makes quite a bit, because we like our frosting thick.

You could easily add less, and add more, little by little as needed.

If you are looking for a recipe shortcut, you could also used pre-made or canned frosting. We recommend making the homemade frosting, but if you are in a hurry, and don’t have time to make your own frosting, you could easily use pre-made.

You could even use a different flavor, like chocolate, cherry, funfetti, strawberry, german chocolate, etc.
