Will this recipe work without using Texas toast?
You know what they say, “everything is bigger in Texas” and that includes the thickness of bread slices. For this recipe, we used Texas toast because it is thick and delicious, and the more carbs I get to eat, the better.
Texas toast is just thick sliced bread. If you don’t have it at your store, you could easily use whatever bread you have on hand. You could even make your own Texas toast, by making our, Cinnamon Swirl Bread, and cutting it really thick.
Any bread will work for this recipe. However, if you don’t use Texas Toast, it won’t need to be cooked as long, so watch it carefully. You also don’t need to fully drench it in the egg mixture, because your bread will then get soggy. Just a quick dip will suffice.

As a Brit loving your blog can you tell me what texas toast is please so I can try to source similar over here! Thanks
Texas Toast in the states is bread that has been sliced thicker. You can buy it by the loaf. So basically just a thicker slice of bread.

Just made this but used skim milk instead of the heavy cream. It was still very sweet and very delicious!
I made this about a year ago for breakfast and nobody liked it!
This morning I made this. Had a ripe banana on the counter, and thought chopped pecans would be yummy too, OH YEA was I right! I bought French bread and cut one inch thickness and slit the middle and stuffed them. I happened to have the heavy cream and it does make it more “custardy” but I don’t think it is nessasary. Will need to cook a little longer with the thickness. Make sure the Nutella is spread thin on the bread or it can be too rich. The sprinkle of powdered sugar makes a pretty presentation. My husband liked it and said it didn’t need any syrup.
I used hazelnut flavored coffee cream. Still came out delicious!!!!
