There’s no reason to hang onto your rice cooker with this Instant Pot rice recipe. You can make the perfect sticky (or not sticky) rice in your Instant Pot. When I realized I could make rice in my Instant Pot, my rice cooker went on vacation. Then I realized that I probably never would use my rice cooker again! I got rid of it, clearing out some much needed storage space in my kitchen cupboards. This Instant Pot rice turns out perfectly every time. It’s always soft and fluffy, plus easy to make.
Recipe Ingredient Notes
To make our Instant Pot white rice, you will need the following ingredients: rice and water.
Equipment Needed
For this recipe, you only need a few simple kitchen tools. We recommend using the following equipment: Instant Pot and liquid measuring cups.
How to Make Instant Pot White Rice
- Rinse rice under cold running water until the water runs clear. Put rice into the Instant Pot.
- Then add in water (or broth).
- Lock the lid and set the steam valve to its “sealing” position.
- Select the RICE button, MANUAL button, or HIGH PRESSURE button and follow the cooking chart below.
- Allow the pressure to release naturally for 9 to 10 minutes and then release any remaining pressure.
- Fluff rice with a fork and serve.
Recipe Notes
Rinsing your rice before cooking can help remove some of the excess starch. Some people believe this excess starch may lead to sticking and getting the dreaded “BURN” notice on the Instant Pot. So, while this may seem like an unnecessary step that adds time and a dirty strainer, we highly recommend it! It will be worth it if you want your final product to be fluffy rather than gummy.
Cooking Times for Other Rice Types
When cooking different types of rice in your Instant Pot, the only change you need to make is for cooking time. The rice to water ratio stays the same: 1 cup rice to 1 ¼ cup water. Cooking times for the different types of rice are as follows:
- White or basmati rice: 4-8 minutes
- Brown rice: 22-24 minutes
- Wild rice: 25-28 minutes

I always make your white rice in my instant pot. We love it. I make it in one cup batches it works fine for my busy family but I am curious do I increase the cooking time if I double the amount of rice ?
No, she addressed this in the video. It’s the same cooking time no matter the amount of rice.
You shouldn’t have to double the time.
Has anyone ever tried Jasmine Rice and know the cooking time? This is our go to rice. Thanks 🙂
That is the kind I use, I was wondering myself.

Which type of rice is the “sticky” kind she mentions? I love rice at Japanese restaurants..
We use White or Basmati rice. The Instant Pot cooks it to perfection. We like it so much better than our rice cookers. And to add some flavor, use chicken broth in place of the water. YUM!!
Just made basmati sticky rice as the directions stated above in the video, rinse, add rice, add water, manual for 9 min, NRP for 10 min and it was PERFECT! I will never buy microwave steamable rice again! I even doubled the recipe but cooked for the same time
Instant Pot Rice is the best! And so easy!! So glad you are loving your Instant Pot! Have a great week Katie!
Can this be used for brown rice as well?
Disregard.. I jumped the gun 🙂
My rice and beans come out soggy , I use the rice option and tried the using pressure cook . I make 3 cups rice with one can beans with the liquid. Please help!!!
Should the “Keep Warm” mode be on or off when when cooking the rice?
If I want to add a can of black beans to the rice do I need to add more woater?
You might want to add a little bit more water – maybe about 1/4 cup.
Was wondering what is the largest amount of rice that can be cooked and how much water do I add ?
Your Instant Pot should NOT be filled more than 2/3 of its full capacity at any time, so I suggest you cook in batches, if you need a large amount. 1 1/4 cups water or broth for every cup of rice.
2 cups uncooked rice in a 3-quart.
4 cups uncooked rice in a 6 quart.
6 cups uncooked rice in an 8-quart.
But always be mindful you don’t fill over the 2/3 capacity.
This was the second thing I cooked in my 3 quart instant pot & it turned out perfect. Thank You! Having a stir fry with rice for dinner!
You didn’t say add water in the instructions. seems like a small detail but it says nothing about adding water after you add the rinsed rice.
Thanks for catching that. We’ve added that to the recipe instructions.
When cooking long grain white rice in an 8qt IP, should I be adding more water to prevent burning? I made your spicy chicken and rice recipe. While it was good and pretty straight forward, there was a little burning at the bottom of the pan. Does a non-stick pot make a difference? That is what I was using.
It could be a couple of different reasons. You could spray the bottom of the pot with oil (I tried using evoo and didn’t find it successful). A huge thing for me is RINSE the rice very well before you cook it – it seems to make a difference. Or you could try adding about 1/3 cup more water and see if that helps.
