what could i top this cake with?
This cake is so delicious as is, that you don’t really even need to top it with anything, you can just take a fork to it, and dig in.
However, if you are looking to add a little flavor to this cake, here is what I recommend topping it off with:
- Strawberry slices
- Raspberries
- Lemon slices
- Vanilla glaze or frosting drizzle
- Whipped cream
- Blueberries
- Lemon or Vanilla Oreo Crumbles
- Marshmallow Cream sauce
Really anything that you pair lemon with, you could top this cake off with. I love the fresh fruit. It gives it the perfect burst of flavor, but it is still so light and airy. You will love this cake.
would this recipe work in a bundt pan?
I have only made this cake using a 9×13″ baking pan, but you could easily make it in a bundt pan.
I would carefully watch it as it bakes. It may need more or less time depending on the bundt pan, but the cook time should be pretty similar.

Very Nice with a such easy recepie, which not requires a whole grocery, look delicious! Thanks for sharing, have a wonderful day.
YUM this looks to tasty, and i love lemon lately!
WOW! This sounds like a super easy dessert I just made today. Imagine my surprise when I came across your blog. My recipe is angel food cake mix and 1 can of crushed pineapple (with juice). Super yummy and easy.
Love your recipes and this one really sounds like something I would love. Lemon and angel food mmmmm yum

I have been eating the pineapple & angel food cake for years. So excited to try it with lemon. 🙂
I found this recipe on another site months ago. However, they were not specific to the size of pie filling. And oddly enough, the stores around here only sell the larger size can. I figured this out the hard way. On the 2nd try, I used 2/3 of the larger can and when the cake came out of the oven and cooled some, I put the rest of the filling on top of the cake, kind of like a frosting. And then sifted some powdered sugar on top. It worked. I do have to say that the strawberries and CoolWhip look tempting on top.
This looks great! So easy!
Funny I have a 2 ingredient pink basil limonata.

Two ingredients AND delicious! Doesn’t get any better than that. Thanks for sharing!
Sounds great!
I’m a little confused though …. do you just use the angel food cake mix right out of the box (not adding any other ingredients it would call for) and a can of lemon pie filling?
Yep! It is really as easy as it sounds!!! Use the mix right out of the box- don’t add anything else except the lemon pie filling! 🙂
You can’t go wrong!
I have heard that it works with any kind of pie filling!!! I am dying to try apple and cherry myself!!! 🙂 I have also heard that it works with crushed pineapple!
Do you mix with a mixer or just by hand?
You could totally do either! When I am lazy, I just mix it by hand and it still turns out great. 🙂

I was wondering if you have a suggestion for a substitution for canned lemon pie filling. I can’t find it anywhere where I live and what I tried did not work at all. Thanks so much!
You can actually use any kind of pie filling! My sisters and I have tried cherry, blueberry, raspberry and peach so far . . . and they are all delicious!
Can you use a Lemon cake mix instead on Angel food?
Great question Anne… I need to know that same thing!!!
Great question Anne… I need to know that same thing!!!
Do you grease the pan?
We just sprayed it with non stick cooking spray.
We have only made it with Angel food cake mix so we don’t know how that would work out.
I have done it with crushed pineapple. It was a Weight Watchers recipe I think.
No canned lemon pie filling here either. I bought lemon pie filling and will mix it up then use that. I feel an impending disaster coming up but the taste will be great regardless. Lol.
I add 2 teaspoons of crushed dried rosemary when I make the lemon version of this and drizzle with a small amount of glaze made with sour cream and powdered sugar. It’s fantastic!!
I just discovered your site and am loving it. Thanks for the great stuff!!
Tried this and while it didn’t work as nicely as the picture, it was still really great! Looked high and low for canned lemon pie filling, but it just isn’t sold here, so I bought boxed powdered pie filling (Schiff brand I think) and made that. The downside is I don’t know how much it made. Added that to the cake mixture and baked. Turned out heavier and a little more dense than in the picture, but we just called them lemon bars rather than cake, and it was still awesome!
When I bake the angle food cake with pie filling it rises and looks so good but when I take it out it sinks way down what can I do to keep this from happening .thanks.
Be sure you are cooking it long enough and that you add both packets of the angel food cake mix. Hope this helps.
I have made it with pineapple many times and it is delish
I made this and sure as heck didn’t look anything like the picture. Was just an ugly lump of stuff. I would rather have just eaten the pie filling out of the can. Don’t know what I did wrong, but there was nothing that looked similar to a ‘cake’ or any kind of cake in it, or on it, or around it.
NOW I see what is different from the recipe I had…it says ONE can. The recipe I saw said TWO cans.
Oh my, can’t wait love lemon. Makes me think of grandma, thank you!
This did not turn out good for me….. The cake is too dense …I’m sad now but will probably still eat it
I love lemon and will try this for memorial day. I think I will also try it with key lime pie filling. YUMMMMMMM
when you cool the cake do you turn the pan upside down like you do for a regular angel food cake so it doesn’t fall
We didn’t remove the cake from the pan. We cooled the cake and then sliced it and served it on small plates.
Its is great. I just made one….yummy
This cake is awesome! I fancied it up a bit for a pot luck. I baked it in a bundt pan then I topped it with the rest of the pie filling because I could only find a 22oz can the dusted it with confectionery sugar. Looked so pretty and was was so yummy!
Has anyone tried adding an egg to it to see if it is less dense?
Have you tried making this in a larger size? I need to make a sheet cake for a crowd – my pan is 11 by 16. If you have do you use 3 mixes or 4?
