Sparkles and Shoes
Difficult to find on Disney’s properties here. Thanks. Love this tasty.
I’ve never had a Monte cristo, until this very moment. I saw this recipe and got up and made these. Yum!, this is really good! Thank you for sharing!
I am an avid Disney World visitor and have never seen a Monty Cristo sandwich advertised anywhere in any of their theme parks but, they are one of my favorite sandwiches. Printing out recipe so I can finally make my own at home… Thank you so very much.
The Blue Bayou restaurant at Disneyland (Anaheim, CA) are known for these…yum!
Cafe Orleans at Disneyland serves these. They are amazing.
It is only available at Blue Bayou Restaurant… You have to make reservations ahead of time and it is more of a fancier option to dine.
What kind of bread is used?
I has these sandwiches years ago at the restaurant in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in Disneyland. They were delicious.
Can someone please tell me what kind of bread was used in the recipe?
It is only at Disneyland
Hi Darlene. You can use any kind of bread that you like. We used regular white bread from the bread aisle in the store. Nothing special.
We used white bread for the Monte Cristo Sandwich.
How do you secure the corners with toothpicks? Do you go straight down through the bread/cheese/meat? Or do you go horizontally some how?
I had these in the Blue Bayou restaurant at the original Disneyland, in Anaheim, CA, so I am glad to find a recipe. But I thought they were served with grape jelly?
Hi Regina, We stuck the toothpicks right through the entire sandwich to hold it all together while frying. We dipped ours in raspberry jam. I’m sure grape jelly is good too. Some say that it is served with blackberry jam in the park. It’s all delicious.
Please! Use raspberry jam. Grape jelly sounds terrible. Of course that might be because I’ve eaten a lot of monte Cristos and it’s always with raspberry jam and lots of it! 🙂 I introduced some church missionaries to this and they started out with just a small amount since they have never put fruit jam on top of such a sandwich. After trying it, they went back to the jar and loaded up. 🙂
It’s also at cafe Orleans in Disneyland, it’s a little cheaper but you don’t get the blue bayou atmosphere:)
Not so. I’ve never been to Disneyland, but fell in love with them through Bennigan’s and Cheddars.
Omg bennigans! I’m from upstate NY and all the bennigans closed 10 years ago ?
Yum!!!
Omg, these were amazing! Thank you for sharing!
Any suggestion for how to make this without deep frying? I’ve only seen this made with Swiss cheese, but provolone sounds nice and melty!
Side note: I first had a Monte Cristo in WDW eons ago. Probably early 80s somewhere on Main St that may not exist anymore.
We have a Monte Cristo slider that is baked. It’s pretty delicious too! https://www.sixsistersstuff.com/recipe/2017/05/monte-cristo-slider-sandwiches/
Get it at the Cafe Orleans in Disneyland. Mmmmmmmmm!! And drink it with a mint julep from the same place. Wow!!!!
We are making these tonight as a party. But I’m a little confused about quantities of cheese and meat. The recipe calls for 6 slices, but then the directions indicated we only put 1 slice on the piece of bread. Why does the recipe call for 6 slices of bread and 6 slices of each kind of cheese, and make 3 sandwiches (I do get the bread part;)? (By the way, we are very excited to make these!)
Ah, yes! A delicious Monte Cristo sandwich on the canal in the Blue Bayou restaurant while the Pirates of the Caribbean drifted by in a boat and the music played their songs. Such a fond memory, and Disneyland wasn’t such a crowded zoo in the olden days. I use good old white Wonder bread and my jelly of choice is boysenberry. I agree that the recipe needs only three pieces of each filling for what is three whole sandwiches.
So glad you posted about the restaurant on Main Street in town square
When disney first opened in the early 70s the same town square restaurant served the same sandwiches
I use to eat the sandwich as often as I could. Got the recipe and started making them at home
There version was still the best
Happy to hear from this feed that they still have the sandwich at Disney
How many sandwiches does this recipe make??? It looks like 3, but it doesn’t say.
Oops! Sorry, it does say “serves 3” at the very top.
So good. My whole family loved them. Think breakfast for dinner. I added a teaspoon of vanilla to the batter and added the raspberry jam to the inside of the bread. These were amazing but I feel a bit of a sugar coma coming on.
The first time I had this sandwich was around 1974. I was working at the State Personnel Board in downtown Sacramento, and our unit went out to have a birthday lunch at a restaurant across the street from the Capitol. The sandwich was amazing. I don’t remember this sandwich at the Blue Bayou at Disneyland but that was in 1967, and it was probably added to the menu later but I digress. This sandwich is attributed to the French and it should be extremely light and crunchy if prepared correctly. I don’t remember having it with jam. It’s a little over the top with the jam. The powdered sugar is enough. However, thank you Lauren (and neighbor) for bringing this delicious sandwich to the masses.
Yes, Lauren is close to you in Lincoln! We actually had Monte Cristo Crescents over the weekend (and we love to dip it in a raspberry jam/syrup mixture – it’s amazing.) Thanks for sharing some background on the Monte Cristo!
