Do you have 10 minutes? Then I HIGHLY recommend running into the kitchen and throwing this Chex Funfetti Cake Batter Buddies together.
It is CRAZY addicting, so you might want to double the batch. My husband loves all things made with a Funfetti cake mix, so I made it for him but ended up eating most of it myself. Trust me, you are going to LOVE this recipe.
It’s great for game night, movie night, midnight munchies, or just anytime you are craving a crunch snack. It only requires 5 simple and inexpensive ingredients, that you may already have on hand. I may even say these are better than our original chocolate and peanut butter Muddy Buddies
Only three simple steps to make this Cake Batter Buddies recipe:
Start with your cereal. We prefer and recommend to use Chex cereal. It captures the white chocolate and holds in the powdered sugar and cake mix a little better.

Add your melted chocolate. You can use vanilla almond bark, or white chocolate chips.

Add your dry ingredients, and a few extra sprinkles, if desired.

Eat and enjoy!

Can I make these Cake Batter Buddies using different cereal?
For this recipe, we like to use Chex Mix because it allows the white chocolate to settle into the cereal, and the cake batter to cling to it, giving this more flavor as well as crunch.
We have never made this recipe using a different cereal, but it would still work. The powdered sugar and the cake mix might not stick as well, but it would still be delicious.
Here are a few cereals we recommend you trying, with this recipe:
- Cheerio’s (Honey Nut, or Frosted)
- Frosted Flakes
- Life
- Golden Grahams
- Rice Krispies
Can I use white chocolate instead of almond bark in this Cake Batter Buddies recipe?
You could most definitely use white chocolate in place of Almond Bark. We recommend the almond bar, because it calls for quite a bit of white chocolate, and the flavor has a little more almond taste to it, but white chocolate would work just as well.

Chex Funfetti Cake Batter Buddies Recipe
Ingredients
- 5 cups Chex Cereal, (I used Rice Chex, but Corn Chex would work great!)
- 10 ounces vanilla flavored almond bark, (5 squares)
- 1½ cups funfetti cake mix
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vegetable shortening
Instructions
- Melt Almond Bark according to package directions, adding vegetable shortening to thin it out.
- Pour the cereal into a large bowl and drizzle the melted Almond Bark over the cereal.
- Mix gently with a large spoon or spatula. Dump the cake mix and powdered sugar onto the cereal and mix gently with large spoon until all the cereal is evenly coated.
- Enjoy!
Notes
- You could most definitely use white chocolate in place of Almond Bark. We recommend the almond bar, because it calls for quite a bit of white chocolate, and the flavor has a little more almond taste to it, but white chocolate would work just as well.

I guess my gluten free cake mix would work too? Sounds so yummy!!!
Yes, I think that it would work great!!
Oh my goodness!!!!
I LOVE all your stuff! You rock!
My #2 son would love this if I used yellow cake mix! Have to try this!!
Do you think white chips would work in place of the almond bark?
Can I sub anything for the almond bark? Allergies, you know..
You had me at Cake Batter….lol! mmm
This sounds AMAZING, can not wait to make and chow down :):)
What is your allergy?
I just made this and it is amazing!! can’t wait to share it with everyone!! and I used white chocolate instead of the vanilla almond bark and worked just fine 🙂

Made this tonight for my daughter’s third birthday party tomorrow! I subbed out white chocolate chips for the almond bark and used yellow cake batter. Pretty awesome!!
Oh wow… this recipe is phenomenal! I just found it via Pinterest 🙂 Will be trying it soon!
Looks amazing! Thanks for Sharing!
prob just white chocolate if you are worried about nuts.
my sister made these the other day! loved em!

Pin them! I’d love for you to link it up at my linky party. You could win $25 of free fabric just for linking up or leaving a comment:http://trophyw.blogspot.com/2012/02/linky-31-will-craft-forfree-fabric.html
I made these as a ‘rough day’ cure after a LONG day today. O M Goodness! Before I tried them I divided them out into single serving bags so as not to eat all my WW points in one sitting, and it is a good thing I did! I had my one serving and OH MY GOODNESS! I used white chocolate chips, no shortening or butter, and I was too lazy to mix the powdered sugar with the cake mix, so just did it straight. Also, I only used a cup and that seemed to be enough. Thank you thank you for sharing!
Made it…ate it…LOVED IT!!! Thanks for the recipe! Super delicious!
Just made this! It is super easy and sooooooo delish!!
How long does this stay good? Do u think it would last in a care package to afghanistan? (takes 2 weeks to get there).

Where can you find almond bark when it’s not Christmas? I asked at my local grocer and they don’t have any.
I found some at my local Wal-Mart . . . I know that they carry it year-round here! I am so sorry! I have also tried Vanilla candy coating and it worked perfectly.
You know, I have never had a batch last longer than 2 days because we eat it all! However, I really think that it would be fine for two weeks in an airtight container . . . it doesn’t have any ingredients that would go back. I say go ahead and try it! 🙂 Let us know!
I just made this with the GF cake mix and it turned out great!! Also, Plymouth Pantry Almond Bark sold at Walmart is Gluten Free. It doesn’t say on the packaging but I checked online.
so how many WW points does it work out to be and what amount for a serving?
Made these last night with a few modifications…I used 10 oz of white chocolate chips instead of the almond bark, and it worked perfectly. Duncan Hines also makes a “snack size” funfetti cake mix which is the perfect size for making this. I added all of this which equaled about 2 cups, and omitted the powdered sugar, and it was plenty sweet! These were awesome!
If you use the cake mix, do you really need the powdered sugar?
I made this yesterday but had to make more today because and am embarrassed to admit, my neice and I ate the whole batch. This stuff is so addicting! Will def double it next time. I couldn’t find Vanilla Almond bark so I ended using a 12 ounce bag of vanilla chocolate chips and a 1/2 cup almonds I dusted in the processor and added a little almond extract which all worked for me.
I Hope to make more for Easter but I’m afraid to as I have no will power when it comes to this stuff lol Thank you for sharing this recipe and look forward to trying more.
I made this using white chcolate chips and added a little almond extract as well. IT IS DIVINE! im supposed to take it to an Easter bbq tomorrow..but i dont think it will last that long lol
Also if you put the funfetti mix on regular “puppy chow” it is AMAZING!!
This was so good. I made it for Easter and I am making it again today for my daughter’s school bake sale.
Not sure what I did , maybe not enuf chocolate? I used a sm bag of white chocolate chips ( not sure what Almond Bark is) and only had Betty Crocker cake mix – but the chocolate seemed to chunk as I was stirring it. And I only used a cup of the cake mix and had a ton of powder left in the bowl I guess it didn’t coat well… Any1 else have this prob?
My boyfriend and I made this about a month ago, and I hate to say it but we weren’t impressed. The cake batter made it taste like we were eating flour. We figure the next time, we’ll skip the cake batter and go all out on the powdered sugar.
Everyone else’s reviews said that they turned out great, were we really the only one’s who disagreed?
This is so fun and simple, love it! I am definitely going to try it :-))
xoxo

Working on a gf /cf version 🙂
this is awesome. I misread and was on my way to putting a 1.5 cup of cake mix and powdered sugar. I had a cup of each and said that looks like enough dry mix! They came out pretty sweet but OMG. I recorrected on the second batch to just under a cup of cake mix and just over a half cup of powdered sugar and that was great.

Almond bark is pretty much like white chocolate . . . or a vanilla candy coating. Any flavor of cake mix will do! And yes, it really so easy! 🙂 Enjoy!
Love, love, love it! This was a fun, quick snack to throw together for my little ones on a rainy day. Thanks!! 🙂
I HIGHLY recommend running into the kitchen and throwing this amazing little snack together! Send gifts to Pakistan from UK.
another way to “mix” this is… a large brown paper bag or even one of those plastic ones… if you use a brown paper bag you need to shake/mix it kind of quick as the bag will start to get soggy.. the plastic bag.. I put a little bit of the cake/PS mix in it first to keep mix from sticking… oh same w/ the paper bag…
Haven’t tried it yet, but I’m thinking it should have some cinnamon added.

Such a good recipe! I was looking for something special to send my friend in Afghanistan for his birthday and this was perfect. Used white chocolate chips in place of the almond bark and posted my recipe on:
http://unbearablygood.blogspot.com/2012/07/cake-batter-puppy-chow.html
Thanks for this gem!
I made with a GF vanilla cake mix and it was nearly identical to the Funfetti. My friend absolutely adored it when I brought it over to suprise her!
I have made this THREE times in the past two weeks. It has been a hit with everyone! One batch even made a four day trip in the USPS mail, packed away in little mason jars. My friends loved their suprise in the mail and I’m glad to hear they held up well! I also made a batch with gluten free vanilla cake mix and it was a hit. I’m making this again in a couple of days to share with my work friends! LOVE LOVE LOVE this recipe!!! 🙂
I read some people use white chocolate chips…
Perfect treat for first-week-of-school lunch boxes!
THESE. ARE. AMAZING.
FYI: Don’t be stupid like me and add vanilla. It freezes up the almond bark. I didn’t think it would be like real chocolate in that aspect but boyyy was I wrong! Stupid mistake!
I am looking to serve a group of 30 about how much do you think I would need to multiply the ingredients by?
Hi Ben! I am sorry that I am just getting back to you . . . I would probably triple the recipe to feed 30 people. I hope that helps! 🙂
I’ve always made my “puppy chow” in a dutch oven. Melt/mix everything in one pan, then put the lid on the pan and start shaking. No soggy bags:o)
Oh yes, lets just all eat cake mix straight from the box and coat it with lots of sugar and fat! Another healthy way to get through any situation: parties, long days, treating ourselves with the excuse to making it for our husbands. And girl with the gluten free recipe – trading flour, yeast, gluten for more sugar is not an answer to your problem.
thank you for this very productive and helpful comment.

Yes, would love to hear about the WW points!
Found this on Pinterest and wanted to try it. I only had yellow cake mix. Followed the recipe exactly except I didn’t have shortening but didn’t matter. This came out great. I will definitely make it again. May add some pretzels to it too. 🙂 Thanks for sharing.
Meet you at the SL home show. And we are having this great treat for FHE tomorrow. Thanks alot.
Check the package but I don’t think “Almond Bark” actually has nuts in it. I think the name comes from it being candy coating that can be used to make nut “barks” etc. You could use any sort of vanilla candy melt–the Wilton ones come in colors.
This looks Awesome! About how many servings would you say this specific recipe makes? I’m going to make this for my son’s birthday party and will need to fill small paper snack cups for about 50, and need to know about how many batches to make. Thanks so much!
When I pulled it up it shows 1/2 cup powdered sugar. I’m checking on it now. Seems to match the blog site. Thanks for the heads up…..we’ll make sure it all matches!
I just made some for my son’s 3rd grade class Halloween party, but I used the “Halloween Funfetti” mix instead, sooo yummy! Also, I did not have almond bark, but was able to substitute Wilton’s candy melts with a little added shortening to thin it out. Added the sprinkles that come in the cake mix packet while the candy melts were still wet, but cooled down somewhat. Nice quick snack with a Halloween theme!! Thanks Six Sisters!!
Tried this and didn’t care for it at all. It tasted very artificial and was way too sweet. Very disappointed.
What is almond bark
Almond bark is a white chocolate that you can melt for dipping. It comes in a packages like chocolate chips, or blocks, or round discs. It’s found in the store by the chocolate chips.
Since I am making this to share with other people, I called the Pillsbury consumer line to verify there are no issues with using a cake mix right out of the box as a coating. I was told Pillsbury does not recommend eating anything raw and the cake mix has raw flour in it. I just wanted to pass this on.
It says in the notes that you can use white chocolate. That’s probably what I’ll be using too. 🙃
This is probably a dumb question…but what is vegetable shortening? Oil?
WOW! Printing this one and it’s going into my kitchen. I loved it.
It’s right next to the vegetable oil. It’s in a solid form. It’s made by Crisco.
Loved this recipe!! It was so delicious! I made it for a birthday party in June and it was a huge hit! I would recommend having a helper, as it helps make sure the Chex get covered with the cake mix/powdered sugar before the chocolate dries. It tastes just like a birthday cake, and made a great addition to our treats (we had ice cream sundaes, cookies, and these)! I loved it so much that I’m here again to make a second batch!! Thanks for the great recipe!
