If you are anything like any of us sisters, sometimes the hardest part of working out is getting started.
Each of us sisters has a story when it comes to weight gain, weight loss, and learning many things along the way. Today we wanted to share Stephanie’s story with you (she is sister #4).
In her own words:
I just remember I was a freshman in college and one day, I weighed myself. I knew that I had gained some weight, but I wasn’t prepared to see 183 pounds. At 5’7″ – that’s A LOT!
I was depressed, and I remember going downstairs with tears in my eyes, sitting on the couch to watch Prison Break (because I’d been watching it unhealthily for days). After a few episodes (yep- a FEW!), I finally told myself – “NO! No more! I’m putting on my tennis shoes and going for a run!”
I’d always been active in high school, so I didn’t think that a little run would be that bad. But I barely made it half a block – and I was so out of shape I had to walk slowly home.
Even though I was disheartened, I was determined to change. I didn’t want to feel tired and unhappy anymore. So everyday, I would lace up my shoes and run again. And everyday, I would push myself a little further, trying to beat the distance I had done the day before.
And when I could finally run a few miles in a row, I set a goal to run a half marathon.
It was hard and the training was intense, but I did it. I didn’t give up . . . on running or on myself.
I stopped eating out for every meal – and when I did eat out, I would eat small portions or order healthier options.
I actually started eating vegetables and making food at home – and that helped so much!
In about 3 months, I had dropped 30 pounds. When I got engaged two years later, I dropped another 10 pounds before the wedding.
I have now run 15 half marathons and one full marathon, along with many other relays and races. I try to do about 2 race a year to keep me motivated and give me something to train for.
It was hard, but I learned that I am worth it. We all are!
When you are at the beginning of your journey, the end seems so far away. It’s overwhelming to know where to start.
The good thing is that you can do it one step at a time. You don’t have to lose 40 pounds overnight – set your goals and then set mini-goals that will help you get there, little by little.
We know that there are many people in the same boat that we are – weight gain happens. Falling out of shape happens. Binge eating happens. And getting back into shape is such hard work. Sometimes you have to reach out for help!
