I love going to fairs in the summer and sitting down with a piping hot funnel cake buried in powdered sugar. I don’t know if there is anything better! This recipe tastes just as good as any funnel cake I’ve ever had! We had these for breakfast and they were so quick and easy that we will definitely be making them a lot more around this house!
Homemade Funnel Cake Recipe
I love going to fairs in the summer and sitting down with a piping hot funnel cake buried in powdered sugar. This recipe tastes just as good as any funnel cake I’ve ever had!
Ingredients
- 2 cups milk
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 Tablespoon sugar
- 4 Tablespoons butter, ½ stick, melted
- powered sugar, for topping
Instructions
- Combine milk, egg, vanilla in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, combine flour, salt, baking soda, and sugar and gradually add to wet ingredients.
- Beat with a mixer until a smooth batter forms. Fold in melted butter.
- Pour batter into a funnel or squeeze bottle while using your index finger to stop the flow of the batter.
- Bring the funnel over the hot oil and release your finger to start a stream of batter while moving the funnel in a circular motion to create spiral-like shapes. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes until golden brown and slightly puffed.
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
Notes
- Use enough oil to cover the bottom of your pan, about 1/2inch deep

Having this for dessert tonight here Northern Ireland thanks for posting!!!! 🙂
it doesnt mention how much oil to use. can it be done in a pan with a small amount of oil or is it more like deep frying?
Can you give more details on the oil? I am assuming you mean vegetable or canola oil. What temp should it be at for the frying? My middle son loves funnel cake and would be so excited if I made this. TFS
Has Elyse had her baby yet?
I used veggie oil. And I.used my deep fryer. Turned out just fine.
Hi Karissa!
I finally had my baby! Thanks so much for asking, you are so sweet!
Elyse
Hi Cari!
I just used enough oil to cover the bottom of my pan by about 1/2″ so it just depends what size of pan you use. You don’t need any more than that because you’ll flip the funnel cake over rather than submerging it in oil. Hope that helps!
Hi Sherrie!
I just used enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom of my pan by about 1/2″ so it just depends what size of pan you use. I also just heated my oil over medium high heat for about 5 minutes. You can test it by dropping a little batter in and seeing if it turns golden brown within 10 seconds or so. Hope that helps!
Oh, this so yummy! My family would love these! Thank you so much for sharing at A Bouquet of Talent! I am so thrilled to have you, and so appreciate you sharing! Can’t wait to link up to your party, Friday! HUGS

What is the red stuff on it in the picture?
I would assume strawberries 🙂 like what is always on funnel cakes.
Here I am-running into your site again. I HAVE to make these for my boy tomorrow. I’ve already made your twisted breadsticks from that pizza joint. These look like they will be just as tasty. Love your blog!
Love the Mother’s Day ideas can’t wait to try them out
Can you make it without the vanilla extract?
I’m sure it will be fine without the vanilla. The vanilla adds to the flavor of the funnel cake.
