Tips for Making An Instant Pot Chicken Thighs recipe
- Season your chicken before cooking to get flavorful chicken every time. Don’t miss this step!
- Try to brown chicken first in a little olive oil using the sauté setting on your instant pot. This will crisp up the chicken (particularly if you’re cooking with skin-on thighs) and those little browned bits left in the pot are flavor explosions! So good!
- Avoid the burn notice! Pour at least 1 cup of chicken broth (or a cup of water) into the inner pot and use a spatula to scrape up any browned bits on the bottom of the pot (if you previously browned your chicken). This step will ensure you don’t get a burn notice during the pressure cooking process. Leave the chicken broth or water in the Instant Pot, as it will allow the pot to come to pressure and cook the chicken!
- Check each instant pot recipe for instructions on whether you will need to cook on high pressure or low pressure. Or if the recipe calls for a natural release over a quick release to release the remaining pressure. Every minute can make a difference in how an instant pot recipe turns out! Trust the recipe!
- For even cooking, it’s best to try to keep the chicken in a single layer in the pot where possible.
- Always make sure your Instant Pot lid is in the sealing position so it can come to pressure!

YES! The next time you’ve got some chicken sitting in your freezer, pop them in the instant pot with your favorite easy recipe, and just add to the overall cook time. If you are using boneless chicken thighs, the cook time will be a little less than if you’re using bone in thighs. Check the individual recipe card for the exact cooking process, but usually you’ll want to add between 5-7 extra minutes cooking time for frozen.
