How to find the Nutrition Information using My Recipe Magic (The “Magic” Button)

nutrition information

As the size of our blog started to grow, we started getting questions every day about how to find the nutrition information on our recipes.

We honestly had no idea where to even start to calculate that sort of info. :)

We approached our dad with the problem and started talking about how great it would be if there was a site that allowed you to find the nutrition information of any recipe-

even your own family recipes!

When it comes to dieting and trying to eat healthier, counting calories, carbs and fat grams is a definite must, but it’s hard when you are making homemade dishes, which was one of the driving forces behind our new site (My Recipe Magic).

As many of you have probably noticed, there is a new button on each of our posts-
We call it the “Magic” button. :)

magic button

It may be a little cheesy, but that is where the magic happens with our recipes on Six Sisters’ Stuff.

You can usually find the button right above or below each post.

magic button 2

Click on the magic button of any recipe and you are taken to it’s page over on MyRecipeMagic.com.

From there you will see the recipe and a couple of tabs across the top.

magic button 3

To find the nutrition information, click on the second tab titled “Nutrition”.

magic button 4

You then will be able to see the nutrition facts for each serving.

Keep in mind that the nutrition facts are calculated using the exact recipe- you can alter it by using low-fat or fat-free ingredients
(or the opposite and using higher calorie and higher fat ingredients).

Continue to scroll down and you will see that at the bottom of the nutrition facts, we also include Weight Watchers Points and Points Plus!

magic button 5

Want to add YOUR OWN family recipes and find out their nutritional value(and make a little extra cash from sharing them)?

Spinach and Artichoke Sandwich Melts Recipe

I love our Spinach Artichoke Dip, and was on the hunt to find a tasty spin on it!  I came across this recipe from Half Baked Harvest and ran to the store right then to get all the ingredients I needed to make it!  What is better than your favorite dip slathered over some toasty bread?  This recipe is also a lighter version of traditional spinach and artichoke dip by using Greek yogurt and very little cream cheese.

Spinach and Artichoke Sandwich Melts Recipe:
(Makes 6 sandwiches)
Ingredients:
1 Tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 Tablespoon all-purpose flour
1/2 cup milk
1 ounce cream cheese
1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup fat free Greek yogurt
1 (6.7 ounce) jar grilled artichoke hearts, chopped
1/2 cup frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained
1 loaf French bread, cut into 12 slices
Butter, for spreading
Directions:
Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.  Add minced garlic and cook for two minutes.  Whisk in flour until a paste forms.  Cook over medium-low heat for 1 minute, then pour in milk.  Stir and cook one minute.  If your paste gets too thick, add a little more milk to thin it out slightly.  Add cream cheese, mozzarella, Parmesan and pepper.  Stir until cheeses are melted.  Whisk in Greek yogurt until sauce is smooth.  Fold in chopped artichokes and spinach.
Heat a skillet or griddle to medium-low heat.  Butter the outsides of each slice of bread then spread 2-3 Tablespoons of the cooked dip on one slice of bread and top with another, with the buttered sides of bread on the outside. Cook sandwich until both sides of the bread are golden brown.
(Recipe adapted from  Half Baked Harvest)

How to increase page views AFTER sharing a recipe on MyRecipeMagic.com

increase traffic and pageviews

I have a couple of close friends who don’t blog, but have been sharing their recipes on MyRecipeMagic.com. They got all signed up, started adding their recipes, and then called me a couple days later when only a handful of people had actually viewed the recipe. They all had the same question:

Without a blog, how do I get people to see my recipes (and make some more money?!)?

Unfortunately, very few people will find you without a little bit of work on your end. There is so much power in social media (which is how we grew our site from a hundred pageviews a day to a couple hundred thousand pageviews a day) and you should capitalize on it!

Here are the ways that you can get more page views over to your recipes:

1. Share it on your Facebook page. Chances are that you have a lot of friends on Facebook and it’s a fast and easy way to get a lot of people to see your recipes. Here are some FB tips to help you get the most exposure:
-Share a picture. Instead of just sharing a link to your post, include a picture! When you go to change your status update, click on “photo” and upload a picture of your recipe. Be sure that you include a link to that post (www.myrecipemagic.com/yourrecipe) in the description of that picture that you share to your wall. I would suggest saying something like this, “I just {this recipe} on My Recipe Magic. Click here to check it out!”.

facebook -Ask your friends and family to share your recipe on their own FB pages. Thankfully FB makes it so easy! When you post a picture, all that they need to do to share it with their friends is click on the “share” button!

-Share it on My Recipe Magic’s Facebook page! Upload a photo or a link to our PB page. We would love to feature your recipe for our readers and followers!

2. Share it on Instagram. The power of a picture is powerful! Instagram is blowing up and you could help to get the word out about your recipes and what you are doing on My Recipe Magic by sharing with your followers pictures of your recipes. (PS- if you do share a picture on Instagram, be sure to tag us in it! @MyRecipeMagic or #MyRecipeMagic)

3. Share your recipe on Link Parties. Have you ever heard of a link party? If you are not a blogger, it’s probably a foreign concept to you. A Link Party is basically a chance for you to share your work on someone else’s blog or website. It is a great way to get added exposure and for others to find your recipe. If you want to see an example of what a link party looks like, click here to see the party that we host each weekend. It’s really simple to share a link at a link party! The best tutorial that we have found  that shows you how to link up is over at Funky Junk Interiors- they walk you through step-by-step how to share your posts on someone’s link party.

There are link parties that happen every day! Linky Here has a great directory of food link parties that happen all over the internet. You can check it out HERE.

If you are going to try linking up to a link party, test it out here tonight at Six Sisters’ Stuff! Our link party goes live at 8 PM (MST) and we would love to see some recipes from YOU! The closer to the beginning of the party you link up, the more traffic you will see!

4. Email My Recipe Magic. Send them a picture of your best work and ask to be a featured recipe or even a featured chef. We would be happy to pin you work to our Pinterest boards, feature you on My Recipe Magic, tweet about your recipe, or share it on our Google + page. We love to share your work! You can send an email to courtney@myrecipemagic.com to be featured or email info@myrecipemagic.com with any questions you have!

5. Pin it on your Pinterest boards. For real traffic potential, you are going to want to be on Pinterest! Make a board of just your recipes on My Recipe Magic and pin every recipe to that board (such as Mommy’s Sweet Confessions has done here!). Make sure you have found as many “friends” on FB as possible, finding people through your email, Facebook, and Twitter. The more followers you have, the more “repins” you will get (which means traffic!). Repin your recipes a couple of times a m0nth- do it on different days and at different times- you will get a different audience each time.

Of course, there are many more ways to see more traffic (Twitter, Google +, emailing family and friends, etc). The very best way is to have a blog. If you have ever wanted to start a blog or have started but are not sure where to go from here, be sure to check out our eBooks:

(This post is part of our MyRecipeMagic.com series, which is a new site that Six Sisters’ Stuff launched at the beginning of the year. To read more about it, click here).

Everyday, we receive a couple of requests for recipes that people with diet restrictions or allergies can eat.
So far, none of the sisters have had any major allergies or needed to change our diet, so we don’t have many recipes that focus on these specialized diets.

However, we realized that there is a HUGE need for recipes like this and we wanted a site where people could come and find recipes tailored to their specific diet needs and when we were designing My Recipe Magic, we wanted this to be one of the key components.

We are happy to announce one of the BEST features of My Recipe Magic: The MAGIC SEARCH.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the Magic Search, you will find all the DIETARY PREFERENCES you want to include in your search! Just click what you want to find and the Magic Search will do the rest!

Why We Started MyRecipeMagic.com

Why we started My Recipe Magic

One question we get asked all the time is:

“Why in the world did you start My Recipe Magic?”

With 6 of us sisters, plus our parents, working on the blog for hours each day, why would we take on another huge job?!

Our answer is: Because we are crazy like that. :) Ha ha!

But in all seriousness, one of the main reasons was because we started receiving numerous emails each day asking us for the nutrition information of our recipes. We really had no idea how to find information like that, so we approached our dad (the brains behind the scenes of SixSistersStuff) and talked to him about somehow adding the nutrition information to our site. We learned that it was going to take a lot of work and a lot of money on our end to pay for a program like that, so we started brainstorming ways around that (blogging can be a great source of income, but when it’s split so many ways, it doesn’t end up being that much).

So, we started talking.

The idea came up that there needed to be a site out there that gave nutrition information for whatever recipe you wanted (i.e. Mom’s Famous Marshmallow Brownies . . . it would probably be good to know how many calories I was inhaling as I eat the entire pan . . .).

Then we started talking about our dream recipe site. We wanted a site that:

-gave the nutrition for each recipe
-gave the Weight Watchers points for each recipe (we also received that question numerous times a day)
-gave bloggers more traffic and exposure
-have a place to organize all your favorite recipes (like a virtual cookbook)
-find recipes based on what ingredients you have (for those nights you don’t want to run to the store)
-find recipes based on calories, allergies, cooking times, diets (vegetarian, sugar-free, etc), holidays, cooking methods, etc.

Then we started talking about how incredible it was for us to share our recipes on our blog and make money for it. We decided that it would be awesome to have this site be available to everyone- anyone can share a recipe (we provide the platform) and because of the ads in the sidebars,
they could make money from it.

We knew that this site would be a great resource for other bloggers (any blogger can share a recipe, but My Recipe Magic requires that readers click back to their site to receive the full instructions, thus giving them more exposure and more pageviews), but we wanted it to be a great resource and platform for those who aren’t bloggers, but are still looking for ways to earn a little bit of extra money just by sharing some of their favorite recipes.

{If you are wondering how to upload a recipe and make money from your recipes, be sure to check out this post for all the details!}

The more we talked about it, the more excited we became. We knew that this would be a fun undertaking . . . a lot of work, but also a lot of fun . . . and we were up for the challenge!

We spent HOURS and HOURS designing the site (it kind of has a Pinterest-feel on the home page where you can see the most recently uploaded recipes) and figuring out all the details.

One of my favorite features is the “Magic Search” that lets you look for recipes based on your specific criteria- gluten-free, soy-free, low calories, holidays, cooking time, ingredients, etc, etc, etc. It’s such an amazing tool!

Screen Shot 2013-07-11 at 4.25.54 PM

Now that we are 6 months into it (MyRecipeMagic was launched in January 2013), we are AMAZED at how quickly it has grown! We now have over 13,000 registered users and over 12,000 uploaded recipes with dozens more coming in each day. And we are still just getting started! Little did we know how expensive programming and running a site like this would be, so as we earn more money, we add more features to the site. Click here to see what features will be coming soon! Of course, all of our features, even the most advanced ones, will always be FREE. We will never charge money to use any of the features on our site.

We are taking the recipe world by storm and hope that you’ll join us!

My Recipe Magic: Nutritional Value

Have you ever wondered what the nutritional value of an entire recipe is?  I was determined not to gain the “Freshman 15″ my first year of college, but finding out the nutritional value for every single thing I ate was almost impossible.  I could look up the information for each ingredient but who has the time for that?  That is why my sisters and I came up with My Recipe Magic.  It actually takes any recipe that you want and, through the wonders of super computers, generates a complete list of nutritional value for it.  It even gives me Weight Watcher points!  It is so easy.  Just look for the magic button  at the bottom of our recipes.  When you click on that button it takes you to a full version of the recipe with lots of cool features.  It looks like this:

myrepmag

Just click on the Nutrition tab and get a complete list of nutritional value.

You can search the thousands of recipes already entered or enter your own recipe and let it do the calculating.  You can even create a menu for the entire week and get the nutritional value for that!

There are many great features on this website that we will talk about in other posts.  I love having the nutritional value right at my finger tips! Proud to say I didn’t gain the “freshman 15″, but with all the yummy treats on My Recipe Magic there is a good chance I might be gaining the “sophomore 6″!
