Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe

Sweet Potato Casserole is a family favorite at our house. It is the perfect dish to make for Thanksgiving, but we make it all year round, because it is too delicious to only eat once a year.

I love Thanksgiving.  My favorite of all the food at Thanksgiving dinner is the sweet potatoes.  Mmm Mm Mm.

I just can’t get enough.  I was assigned to bring sweet potatoes to our extended family’s Thanksgiving dinner and have been trying out a few recipes.

This recipe is at the top of the list. This recipe could easily be doubled if you are feeding a crowd. It’s a crowd favorite for sure, so you may just want to double it from the get go.

It is so easy to make, and we honestly make this Sweet Potato Casserole all year round, because once a year, just isn’t enough for this good stuff.

should i use yams or sweet potatoes for this recipe?

What is the difference between yams and sweet potatoes?

This is a commonly asked question. People often don’t know which ones to use when it comes to baking. I myself, had no idea what the difference was. I did a little research and found out that you most likely have never had a yam.

Yams and sweet potatoes are both a tuberous root vegetable, however Yams are grown in parts of Asia and Africa.

The deeper copper colored sweet potatoes are often referred to as yams because they have the soft outside and sweeter skin, like a true yam.

Sweet potatoes, with a lighter skin and inside, have a harder skin. This is how they differentiate the two at grocery stores. Both the orange and yellow sweet potatoes, are actually sweet potatoes, although label differently at the store.

Mind blown. I know. Either one would work for this recipe. They cook just about the same and have a similar flavor.

can i double this recipe?

You can most definitely double this recipe, in fact we recommend it, because it is so delicious that you will probably want seconds, along with everyone else.

We do however, recommend using two separate 9×13 inch pans, because one pan would be too small if you doubled it.

Ingredients

    Sweet Potato Mixture:
  • 3 cups cooked and mashed sweet potatoes (I used about 5 medium sweet potatoes)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • Topping:
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 3 Tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine mashed sweet potatoes, sugar, salt, vanilla, eggs and butter.  
  3. Pour mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.  
  4. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, pecans and butter to make topping.  
  5. Sprinkle topping on top of sweet potato mixture.  
  6. Bake for 30 minutes.

  1. Thanksgiving Eve I needed a recipe for a Sweet Potato casserole, went on Pinterest & was so confused as to which one recipe to use. I selected this recipe, which the only difference was I added some cinnamon, & it was absolutely delicious. Now I didn't mention that I have never dared for or made a Sweet Potato casserole, however I couldn't eat enough of it as well as my family. The consensus was it was the best Sweet Potato casserole everyone had ever eaten. Thank You for an excellent recipe & I will now start following your site. FIVE STAR RECIPE !!!

    I made this for Thanksgiving and LOVED it. I've always been so skeptical about making sweet potatoes sweeter in casseroles like this and the marshmallows always scared me away. I think that sweet potatoes are just so good as is! But this was AWESOME. Loved it and I will totally be making it again. It was like a little bit of pre-dessert dessert on my Thanksgiving plate :).
