Slow Cooker Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches

┬áThis is one of my go-to easy meals! It is so simple to throw together and cooks all day, making your meat so tender that it practically falls apart. My kids love to eat it on little rolls because it’s the perfect size for their hands, but my husband eats his on foot-long hoagies. čÖé

  • 1 1/2 lbs beef round steak
  • 1 green pepper, sliced thin
  • 1 medium onion, sliced thin
  • 1 (14 oz) can beef broth
  • 1 envelope Italian dressing mix
  • 1 large loaf French bread, sliced into sandwich lengths (or 4-6 hoagie buns)
  • Provolone cheese slices

  1. Spray crock pot with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Cut meat into strips, place in slow cooker.
  3. Add green pepper, onion, broth, and dressing mix.
  4. Cover and cook on low 7-8 hours, or high 3-4 hours.
  5. Spoon meat mixture onto bread, top with a slice(s) of cheese.
  6. Another option is to toast bread in a 375 degree oven for 5-10 minutes, add meat, cover with cheese, then bake an additional 5 minutes to melt the cheese.
  7. My husband loves to top his sandwich with A1 sauce . . . you can use any condiments you like.

    • The recipe calls for 1 and 1/2 pounds of meat. If you are planning on cooking all 3 pounds, that is double what the recipe calls for, so you will need to double the other crock pot ingredients. Cook close to the same amount of time. May need to add about an hour. Keep checking it so it doesn't burn.
    • Hi Tawnya, The italian seasoning adds a delicious flavor to these sandwiches. You could add Italian dressing for some flavor. Maybe start with a little over 1/8 of a cup. You could always add more as it's cooking if you feel it needs more flavor. Then I would add another 1/8 of a cup.

Am I the only one who thinks it important for this recipe to suggest the size of the beef slices to use? Just saying to "cut the meat into strips" is lacking the specificity that is needed for trying to duplicate your directions. Has anybody actually prepared this recipe ? Could you please post back with what size strips you used? Thank you!
    • The thickness can vary because it cooks in the slow cooker all day and comes out very tender. So if you like thicker strips, that will work great. If you like your Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches with thin meat, that works great too. We like it sliced about 1/4 to 1/3 inch thick.
  2. I prepared a freezer meal earlier in March using tips from the corresponding YouTube video and from emailing SSS directly :). As suggested, I used the 24 oz. bag of John Soules Beef Fajitas and I purchased it from the freezer section at Walmart. I put all ingredients (except cheese and bread, of course) in a gallon-sized freezer Ziploc bag. I placed sealed bag on a quarter sheet pan and placed in freezer. (I later removed the pan; it just helps initially with freezing 'flat'). A few weeks later, when I was ready to use it, I sprayed my 6-qt. slow cooker with cooking spray. I removed the frozen contents of the Ziploc bag (DID NOT THAW) and placed in slow cooker (it was a solid chunk and I just made a note to go back after a half hour or so to break up into chunks). I then cooked for 4 hours on LOW. This was definitely the best 'freezer meal' we've tried as a family. My husband loved it. My kids found the beef fajitas to be pretty spicy but it was still really good. It was a fun twist on the typical philly cheesesteak recipe and great freezer meal to have on hand.
