I’m not going to lie, I have a MAJOR sweet tooth. I have a hard time controlling that sweet tooth when there is any chocolate in the house, especially chocolate in the form of Lunch Lady Peanut Butter Bars!
With summer in full swing I’ve been trying to cut back on the sweets, but I definitely still have my sweet tooth. Smoothies have become my go-to to stay cool and satisfy my sweet cravings!
Best Blenders for Smoothies at home
Let’s talk about blenders for a minute! Using a good blender can make or break your smoothie, especially when you’re adding greens. Nothing is worse than getting a slurp full of spinach when you’re supposed to be slurping a pina colada.
We love using our Magic Bullet Blender for smoothies. I love that it makes smaller portions and I don’t have to clean a giant blender each time I want a smoothie.
If you’re going to be making larger portions, I’d recommend a blender like THIS one!
Every piece is dishwasher safe so you can just pop it in there when you’re done with your smoothies. It also blends everything up smooth so you’re not dealing with whole leaves getting stuck in your straw!

Substitution for Almond Milk in Smoothies
We know almond milk can be an acquired taste! Here are a few options you can substitute in instead.
- Skim Milk
- Greek Yogurt
- Water
- Coconut Milk
- Soy Milk
how to freeze bananas for your smoothies
Before we talk about freezing our bananas, choosing the level of ripeness is important too! We like to use medium ripe bananas in this recipe, before they turn completely brown but there is no more green on the peel.
Bananas that have more time to ripen have more time to develop natural sugars, so they will sweeten your smoothie a little more.
You’ll want to make your frozen bananas ahead of time. Start by removing the peel, cut them into fourths, and place them in a large gallon, ziplock bag.
Seal your bag, pushing all the air out, and put them in the freezer. They are ready to go in your smoothies about an hour or two later.
They are easy to pull apart once they are frozen, so feel free to freeze a large quantity for a week’s worth of smoothies!
I usually don’t keep my bananas in the freezer for more than four weeks, because then I feel like they start tasting like the freezer, losing their sweetness.

Piña Colada Green Smoothie Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup frozen pineapple
- 3 Tablespoons unsweetened coconut flakes
- 1 cup almond milk
- dash of coconut extract
- 1 cup baby spinach
- 1 large banana frozen
Instructions
- Place all the ingredients inside blender.
- Cover and blend until smooth, stopping frequently to push down anything stuck to the sides (especially those with a lower-power blender).
- Pour into glass and enjoy. Makes one serving.
