Melt in Your Mouth Slow Cooker Pot Roast Recipe

This is probably the most moist Pot Roast recipe we have.  The mixture of the various sauces turn this into a mouth watering feast with all the simplicity of a crock pot meal.

  • 3-4 pound beef roast
  • 5 red potatoes (quartered)
  • 12 ounces Coca Cola
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup chili sauce
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 3/4 package dry onion soup mix
  • 2 cups baby carrots


  1. Spray slow cooker with non stick cooking spray.
  2. Place roast in the bottom of the slow cooker.
  3. Place potatoes and carrots all around the roast.
  4. In a mixing bowl combine the cola, brown sugar, chili sauce, ketchup, and dry onion soup mix.
  5. Pour the mixture over the beef and potatoes.
  6. Cook on low for 8 hours.

    Have this in the crockpot now, can't wait to try it! I do want to advise against baby carrots, though. They are soaked in a chlorine solution (a known carcinogen) as a preservative, this is why they turn white as they age. Use frozen or take an extra 2 minutes to cut some up.

      Hi Imogene. To copy: Go to Edit, Highlight the article, then get out of the article and go to the send page. Put you email address. Then drop down to where you would normally type your message.     Hester, You can put a bowl under a sieve and dump the onion soup mix in the sieve. Shake, and gently press the mix through it. This way you get the wonderful flavor from the mix, but not the onions. I do this when having my brother and his family for a meal, because they don't like onions. I hope you enjoy.

    I'm not a cook, so I always need explicit directions. For example: this recipe does not show the size of the crock pot or how many people it will serve. Am I the only one that doesn't know this? Is there another way to know what size crock pot to use?
    • We ususally use a 6 quart crock pot. For the servings just click on the MAGIC button under the picture and then click NUTRITION. It will give you all the servings and nutritional info on the recipe. You could get a few more servings if you were closer to a 4 pound pot roast. Hope this helps.
  6. This recipe is listed in your 50 freezer meal list. I have a question about freezing it since I am making it for a friend. Should I add everything, even the coke in the bag before I freeze it, or mix everything except the coke? I was not sure how the it would be with all the liquid. I want to make this as easy as possible for her. Thanks for your help!

    I've made this several times now for different groups and it's been a hit every time. I usually halve the ketchup with garlic diced tomatoes and add a little more brown sugar and a quarter cup of vinegar. I never have left over.

    I am surprised that no one else said this is very very sweet! Did that not bother anyone else? I made two of these in freezer bags and I am making the second one today to bring to a friend with a hurt back. I am trying to think of ideas to add to it to make it less sweet. Let me know if anyone has any advice!? Thanks!
    • The key to cooking a good moist roast is low and slow! (low temp and a long time at the low temp). A chuck roast is not that great for the oven, but in a slow cooker it will be so moist. The coke acts as a tenderizer and gives it a yummy sweet taste, but it won't taste like the soda pop. Hope this helps. You can also talk to your butcher at the grocery store. They are always full on great information!
  9. At 57 (or whatever it is now), I'm just learning some of the finer points of cooking. I'm learning most of it off my favorite show called Chopped. It seems that they're always "searing" the meat before the do anything else to it to hold the juices in. Would that help in this recipe?
