Honestly, I am not quite sure how this recipe got its name, but I think it’s because John Wayne loved casseroles too!
I know some people aren’t a huge fan of casseroles, but as a mom, I absolutely love them. It’s so nice to be able to throw something together and walk away and get more done while it’s cooking.
Also, it doesn’t hurt that my kids eat this WITHOUT COMPLAINING! It is a hit in our house. I’ve even considered doubling the batch so I actually get to have some leftovers. That’s another reason casseroles are one of my favorite things to make, who doesn’t love leftovers?

How to make John Wayne casserole with Bisquick:
Begin by preheating the oven to 325 degrees and spraying down your 9×13 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.

Then, using your medium-sized pan, brown the ground beef and then add in the taco seasoning and ¾ cup of water to the pan and let it simmer for 3-4 minutes until it begins to thicken up.

Then, in your medium mixing bowl, stir together the sour cream, mayo, half of the cheese, and half of the onion and set it aside once it’s all combined.
In another small mixing bowl, mix together the Bisquick biscuit mix and water to make the biscuit dough. Then, in the greased pan, press the dough into the bottom and about a ½ inch up the sides.
Now, in another pan saute the other half of the onions and green peppers until they are just slightly tender.
Then top the biscuits in this order:
- Cooked ground beef
- Diced tomatoes
- Sauteed green peppers and onions
- Can of green chilies
- Sour cream and cheese mixture
- Remaining cheese on top

Be sure to follow those layers for the best success! Then pop the family dinner recipe in the oven for 30-35 minutes or until the edges begin to brown slightly.
