Turtle Thumbprint Cookies

Our grandma makes the best thumbprint cookies! We shared her recipe a few years ago, and still can’t get enough of it! Every year around the holidays we love making her thumbprint cookies and sharing them with our neighbors and friends. This year we decided to put a little twist on her cookies, and these delicious Turtle Cookies were the result! These are the perfect cookies to share with your family and friends this year, or to keep all to yourself 😉

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs, separated
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 3 cups of finely chopped pecans
  • 1 (11 oz) bag of Kraft Caramels
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 cups chocolate chips


  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees
  2. Mix together the butter, shortening, brown sugar, egg yolks, and vanilla.
  3. Slowly mix in the flour and salt. Shape the dough into 1 inch balls.
  4. Beat the egg whites in a little bowl. Place each dough ball in the egg whites then roll into the chopped nuts.
  5. Place them 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet and press your thumb deeply into the center of your cookie.
  6. Bake about 10 minutes or until it is light brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheet to cool.
  7. Caramel Filling:
  8. In a microwave safe bowl, combine caramel and milk.
  9. Microwave on high in 15 second increments, stirring each time, until melted.
  10. Spoon caramel into center of each cookie.
  11. Chocolate:
  12. In microwave safe bowl, melt chocolate chips on high in 15 second increments, stirring each time.
  13. Once melted, drizzle over cookies and caramel.
  14. Once caramel and chocolate have set, serve and enjoy your cookies!
  15. Makes about 30 cookies
