German Chocolate Cake Cookies Recipe

These are some of our Mom’s best cookies!  The cookie bottom is moist and chewy, then we top it off with the best German Chocolate frosting.  This frosting is a family favorite and is really no fail!  We’re lucky if the frosting makes it to the cookies – it’s so good that we eat it straight from the bowl. 🙂

Ingredients

    Cookie Bottom:
  • 1 (15.25 oz) German Chocolate cake mix
  • 2/3 cup butter flavor shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • Frosting:
  • 1 cup evaporated milk (canned)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 egg yolks (beaten slightly)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 3/4 cup coconut
  • 1 1/4 cup chopped pecans
  • Optional:
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (for drizzle on top of cookies)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl until well blended. Roll into 1 inch balls and place on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  3. Bake for 8-9 minutes, being sure to not over bake. Let cool.
  4. Mix evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, margarine and vanilla together in a sauce pan. Stir constantly over medium heat until it comes to a slow boil. Cook, stirring constantly until it thickens - about 10 to 11 minutes (it must be cooked that long).
  5. Remove from heat and stir in coconut and pecans.
  6. Cool frosting before spreading on cookies.
  7. You can melt semi-sweet chocolate chips and drizzle over top of frosting (optional).
  8. This frosting recipe will also frost a 9 x 13 cake.

  2. These were so good. My cookies stayed soft they were just a little flat. May have been something I did or pan I used. For the frosting I added 1 Tablespoon of cornstarch to the milk and only used 1 cup each of the coconut and pecans. These were so good together. I loved them!
