When we were growing up I remember my Mom buying 5 gallons of milk every week for our family because we loved it SO MUCH! In the next 2 months we will be sharing why we love milk, facts about milk, what it can do for you, and how we get our kids to drink it!
There are a lot of bad things going around about certain foods and for some reason Milk seems to be the one that is picked on a lot. Today we want to share with you 4 things you might not know about MILK.
MILK Is a Top Food Source!
Milk isn’t just for kids, everyone including adults need the benefits of Milk. It is an affordable, convenient and easily accessible source of essential nutrients for all family members.
Milk is America’s top food source of calcium, vitamin D and potassium – three nutrients that are hard to get in our diets! Milk is also a good source of high-quality protein. A large egg has 6 grams of protein compared to an 8-ounce glass of milk which has 8 grams of protein! That is a lot of natural protein!!
Quick Tip: Eating or drinking protein will help you stay more full. I like to give my kids 8 ounces of skim milk or chocolate milk with their breakfast so they can stay full until lunch time at school.
MILK Has Many Nutrients!
There are many options when it comes to milk: fat free, low fat, organic, 2% and whole. Dairy milk provides 9 essential nutrients that your body needs! Fat-free milk contains just 80 calories per cup, and all the nutrients are still there. The milk is still not diluted and has great flavor when buying skim. If you prefer whole, full-fat milk, it’s actually 3.25% milk fat by weight -which is not as much as many people think! Either one you pick, milk is milk and it is still good for you.
Milk Is Right Around the Corner!
Milk is one of the original local, farm-to-table foods. Not too many foods are like that these days! Milk comes from farm families that really care about their cows. Did you know that 97% of dairy farms are still family-owned and operated.
Not a lot is done to the milk between the farm to your fridge. A simple heat-treated process called pasteurization ensures the milk you buy at the store is safe to drink, but does not reduce the nutrients inside.
MILK is Hard to Replace
It is recommended to have 3 cups of milk or milk products every day. Not all non-dairy milks have the same nutrients as real milk, so it’s important to know what you are getting in each glass. For example, dairy milk has 8 times the protein of almond and rice milks – which contain a lot of added ingredients, including added sugar, syrups, salt, thickeners and stabilizers. Real milk’s ingredient list is short and simple, with only ingredients you know.
Have a hard time getting the recommended milk products in?
Here are some things that we do.
Have a cup for breakfast, whether it is in cereal or with your waffles. Chocolate milk will also work!
Have a glass for lunch. If that isn’t possible for you or your kids, give them some after school with their after school snack!
Then have a glass for dinner with your meal.
