We are so happy to be partnering with Smucker’s Natural Fruit Spreads, and Mom it Forward Blogger Network to share with you something we feel strongly about! Please note that we have been compensated for this post, but all opinions are our own.
When we were small, our parents always taught us that it is important to do things for others, especially when you are going through hard times. When my husband was in medical school it was really hard for me. We moved to a new state and into the smallest town you can think of. He studied 16 to 18 hours a day, 7 days of week. Most days he would come home, eat dinner for about 30 minutes then go straight back to studying. When he first started I had a 2 year old and a 4 month old. Needless to say, I was lonely and kind of felt sorry for myself.
About 6 months into my husband’s schooling I got a phone call from my Dad. Now my Dad is an amazing man (He would have to be to raise 6 daughters and survive!) Life hasn’t always been easy for my Dad but he always has a smile on his face. At that time he too was going though some tough things and he talked about when he does good things for other people, it really helps lighten his own load.
It was like a slap in the face as the memories from my childhood came running back through my mind. Service to others is what I needed to focus on instead of focusing on myself.
We didn’t have a lot of money, but my sister’s and I had just happened to start a little blog where we liked to share our recipes. So I decided that I would make some desserts and deliver them to all my neighbors. They loved the treats and so I made it my goal to deliver a treat to someone new every week.
Believe it or not, I began to make friends instantly. People opened up to me and I found that a lot of wives were going through the same thing I was. Because I decided to step out of my comfort zone, I have made life long friends that have changed me forever.
Fast Forward 4 years and my little family and I still deliver treats every week to people around us. That is our way of Spreading a Little Sunshine!
