As the sisters got together and brainstormed what we could do this holiday season, we threw around a lot of ideas – 12 days of fudge recipe, our favorite Christmas cookies, even 12 days of giveaways . . . but nothing felt right. Then we had a new idea- what if we found 12 families who could use a little bit of extra help and love this holiday season?
Last year we were blown away by the thoughtfulness of our readers as we helped one family who was going through a hard time, so this year we decided that we would go a little further and help 12 families! To us, we feel the most joy when we focus on what the holidays are really all about and we believe that the true meaning of Christmas is to love and serve others. With that being said, we are so excited to bring to you our 12 Days of Giving Back! For the next 12 days, we will be introducing you to 12 different families who were nominated by our readers as people who could use a little extra help this during this time. We received HUNDREDS of nominations and each story touched our hearts. The 12 that we chose really had an impact on us and we knew that we needed to help them.
Kassidi and Brandon met in the 6th Grade, under the big skies of Montana. Since getting married 9 years ago, they have acquired two children, Hazel and Olof, a mini van, a few college degrees, and an abundance of love and memories.
The year of 2012 was a rough one for them. After 4 devastating miscarriages, they were exhausted and heartbroken. And then in December, their lives took an unexpected turn – Kassidi found lump on her right breast. Two months later, at the age of 29, she was diagnosed with invasive malignant breast cancer.
In less than a year, Kassidi has undergone 16 rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and a sentinel lymph node biopsy. But through all of this, she has found ways to uplift everyone she comes into contact with. She faithfully supports her husband as he finishes his PhD, and lovingly cares for her two cute children as well as she can with her illness. She diligently serves the young women in her church, never asking for anything in return. I know if I were in her shoes, I would have lost my spirit and vigor after a battle like this – but with Kassidi, she has never lost hope. She may have harder days and longer nights, but her faith and courage are an inspiration to everyone.
I was especially touched by Kassidi’s story from the sweet nomination letters that were sent to me from the young girls she teaches in her church. All of them expressed their love and admiration for Kassidi, and the amazing example of endurance that she sets for them. Even with everything she has going on, her infectious smile and positive attitude never falter.
When her friend told her that she had been chosen, Kassidi was shy and gracious, telling her that there were many other deserving families. But I think it’s Kassidi’s turn for a wonderful Christmas! You can read more of Kassidi’s story on her blog. But I have to warn you – it’s a bit of a tearjerker!
Please help spread the word about Kassidi and her battle against cancer. Every little bit helps!
