Slow Cooker Sesame Beef

With a five-year-old and a three-year-old and a baby that is going to be born any day, my life is pretty crazy right now. I can only imagine how busy I will be when they are teenagers! Right now I am just taking life one day at a time . . . and one dinner at a time!
Slow Cooker Sesame Beef
Ingredients:
1½ lbs. boneless beef chuck roast, sliced into thin strips
1 cup beef broth
½ cup oyster sauce*
½–1 lb. fresh or frozen broccoli florets
¼ cup water
2 tablespoons cornstarch
Cooked rice (optional)
Sesame seeds (for garnish)
In slow-cooker, arrange beef strips; pour beef broth and oyster sauce over the beef.
Cover and cook on LOW for 6–8 hours or on HIGH for 3–4 hours or until beef is very tender.
If using fresh broccoli, place broccoli in microwave-safe bowl with ¼ cup water. Microwave 4–5 minutes, until broccoli is tender. If using frozen broccoli, follow cooking directions on packaging.
In a cup, combine cornstarch and 2 tablespoons cooking liquid; stir until smooth. Add to slow-cooker and stir well to combine. Drain the broccoli and stir into the slow-cooker. Cook uncovered on HIGH for about 15 minutes or until sauce is thickened. Serve over hot, cooked rice and garnish with sesame seeds.
*I had never purchased oyster sauce before making this, but I found it on the Asian aisle at my local grocery store, right by the teriyaki sauces. It was only about $2 and has such an amazing taste that totally makes this dish! I don’t know what else you could use as a substitute . . . I highly recommend just trying it.

This looks great! As mom to an 8 yr old and a 13 yr old, life is busy…but just a different busy than it was when I was chasing them around. Always good to have something for those busy nights where we are all going in different directions!
This dish looks so good! I can’t wait to make it.
I am definitely trying this. You put an asterisk by “oyster sauce”… is that cause it’s optional? I’m not sure I want to go tracking that down, so hopefully it is.
Thanks!
Oh man . . . I am so sorry! I forgot to finish this post and the asterisk! I was just going to say that I had never purchased oyster sauce before this, but decided to try it out and it was delicious! I just found it on the Asian aisle at my local Smith’s grocery store, right by all the teriyaki sauces. It was only like $2 and it was so good. I don’t know what else you could use to substitute . . . you should give it a try!

Awesome!! I’m going to make it this week!!! And thanks for the encouragement on the oyster sauce – I wasn’t sure about it – but I will definitely give it a try!!
We have a fanily member with shellfish allergies so I definitely am leery of the oyster juice. Anyone know what it tastes like without the juice? No suggstions for a substitute?
Hi, I came across your post when looking for reviews. They do make vegetarian oyster sauce that is made without oysters and with mushrooms instead. You could try that. My mom who is vegan raves about it.

yeah,I remember really liking this one. here is the original post that I made about it: http://www.365daysofcrockpot.com/2011/03/march-madness-day-31-slow-cooker-beef.html
I also really think the oyster sauce is perfect…smith’s carries it and I think walmart too!
Making this right now, excited to try it. Also I have cooked with oyster juice before and it makes for very good flavor. It hardly smells like anything when you open the jar which I found to be a plus.
This looks good I’m looking forward to making it. One thing, when you say combine the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cooking liquid, what do you mean by cooking liquid? Forgive me I’m not the biggest cooker lol.
This is really delicious and the chuck roast was very tender. I added a bit of onion & red pepper strips to mine. The whole family loved it! This one will definitely be a regular on our menu plan.
This may be a dumb question, but does the oyster sauce make it taste more like seafood? I really dislike seafood, but the recipe looks so good I want to try it!
The sister that made this HATES all seafood! She said it didn’t taste fishy at all. If it did she would not have posted it!
hope this helps!
I’m planning on making this tomorrow, but I have a question. Has anyone made this and steamed their broccoli the day before? I work Mondays until 6, then pick up the baby at my mom’s, so by the time I get home it’s 7. Ideally, I’d like to just be able to stir in the cornstarch mixture, throw in the already-steamed broccoli, and sit down to eat by 7:20. Do you think cooking the broc the day before would take away from the dish in any way?
Trying this tonight, cant wait looks delish!!
there is a difference b/w Oyster Sauce (a brown asian gravy type substance) and oyster juice.
