I am crazy about Chinese food! I always feel so guilty after I chow down on a three-course orange chicken meal at Panda Express (yes, I get the same entree 3 times because I love it so much), so I thought this might be a better option for me. It was so easy! My family loved it. I could have gone with a little less "orange," but other than that, it is a keeper!

Slow Cooker Orange Chicken
(Recipe from Team T Adventures)
Ingredients:
• 1/3 cup flour
• olive oil
• 1/2 Tbl. salt
• 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
• 3 Tbl. ketchup
• 6 oz. frozen orange juice concentrate (thaw or throw it in the microwave for 45 seconds)
• 4 Tbl. brown sugar
In a bowl, mix the orange juice, brown sugar, vinegar, salt, and ketchup. Pour the flour in a small bowl. Cover the chicken breast chunks in flour and shake off the excess.
Pour a small amount of olive oil in a skillet and brown the flour-covered chicken.
The chicken doesn't need to be fully cooked since it's going in the crock pot.
After the chicken is done cooking, pour the pieces into the crock pot. Then cover the chicken with your sauce mixture and give the pot a stir.
Cook on low for 5-6 hours or on high for 2-3.
Serve over rice and even add veggies if you want a healthier meal.

Will be trying this for sure! We are orange chicken fans around here.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds sooooo good! going to make this and throw some rice in the rice cooker, too!
ReplyDeleteMy mouth is watering... it looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteSounds really good. The chicken does not get really soggy in the slow cooker?
ReplyDeleteIs the T a teaspoon or tablespoon?
ReplyDeleteHow much chicken do you use?
ReplyDeleteAlso, traditionally, a big T is tablespoon...
Wow, this looks great! My family loves Panda express orange chicken so I will be trying this for sure. Diana from Closet Crafter.
ReplyDeleteI love Panda Express Orange Chicken! I've always wanted to be able to make it at home, but all the copycat recipes I can find call for eggs (and my kiddos are allergic). Thanks for the eggless orange chicken recipe!!
ReplyDeleteJenny @ Jengerbread Creations
How about making this at home with the bottled orange chicken sauce that panda sells in supermarkets. Have some in the pantry right now!
DeleteLooks so yummy! Can't wait to try it! Come link up at the Creative Genius Link Party! http://thecreativepaige.com

ReplyDeleteand....PRINT!
ReplyDeleteOrange chicken is my daughter's favorite. Can't wait to make this for her (and me too)!
Featuring your post on my Facebook page today.

Des the recipe posted have the "less orange" that you mentioned wanting? Or would it need to be adjusted. And if so what would be your advice on doing that? Thanks so much! Looking forward to trying this recipe!
ReplyDeleteHi Emma!
ReplyDeleteThis recipe does not have the "less orange" that I mentioned. If you did want to add less orange I would just add 4 oz. (1/2 cup) instead of 6 oz. but it is up to you! My husband said that he wouldn't change a thing! :)
I am making this today and did 4 oz OJ concentrate and then added in 2 ounces of water. Not sure if the water was necessary though. I also just added a pinch of red pepper flakes to give it a little bit of spice. It's got a couple hours to go, but it's tasting pretty good right now!
ReplyDeletemmm. I'm going to try this with the actual Panda Orange Chicken sauce from Costco. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteCould you use fresh orange juice? The oranges on my trees are about to be ready for picking so I would love if I could squeeze and use my own juice.
ReplyDeleteI love the fact it's in a slow cooker!!!! I am your newest follower!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnnamaria
Made this today and substituted the flour for a blend of soy and rice flours to be gluten-free. Also added 1 tsp red pepper flakes. It was amazing! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone happen to have a General Tso's recipe for the slow cooker??
ReplyDeleteLOTS OF GOOD THINGS TO MAKE AND GOOD IDEAS THANKS
ReplyDeleteMaybe I messed up somewhere, but this was not good...it was way to "orangy" and not much else. I would appreciate someone else's opinion or a tweak to the recipe. I really love orange chicken!
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way. I think if I make it again, I'll try adding red pepper flakes and reducing the amount of OJ concentrate
DeleteI made this today with an amazing Panda Express-like chow mein. The chow mein was amazing. The chicken not so much. I doubled the recipe, and probably it had too much orange. It had a tangy tart after taste. Any help would be appreciated. Also, mine didn't look like the picture at all. I feel like it needs more breading on the chicken.
DeleteI used orange juice instead of concentrate and it was very soggy. Flavor was ok but the oj must add to much liquid.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info! I was wondering what would happen if I used regular orange juice!
DeleteWhat a GREAT recipe! I tried this tonight & it was a hit. I saw that you said it was a lil too orangey. So I measured 3/4 cup of OJ concentrate & then took approx. 1 Tablespoon size of concentrate out. It had PERFECT flavor. We enjoyed your enchilada pasta recipe a month ago too. Can't wait to find more recipes. THANKS AGAIN! Everyone you gotta try it! Mmmmm!
ReplyDeleteThis was fantastic! A keeper! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis looks SO delicious. I think I'm going to try it with some red pepper flakes, too. I like it a little bit spicy. :) Going to try it when the boyfriend comes to visit.
ReplyDeleteMade this yesterday and it was yummy! The whole family liked it. I'm so glad to have found your blog, so many delicious things to try! Thanks for all the great ideas, my slow cooker will be getting a workout.
ReplyDeleteThis is in my slow cooker right now...it smells delicious!
ReplyDeleteSharing on my blog today :) Loved it!

I am a novice cook and attempted this tonight.
ReplyDeleteOh. My. Word. Amazing! I personally think it tastes more like the Cheesecake Factory's Orange Chicken. I also tweaked the oj and didn't quite use 6oz, but it was really great!
Tried this tonight...sorry to say, I wasn't impressed. :/ I did the 4 oz instead of 6 and added some red pepper flakes...still was bland and just not at all what I thought it would be. I guess this is not for everyone :/
ReplyDeleteSo good! I used 4 oz of orange juice concentrate. I was extremely skeptical looking at the freshly mixed sauce but after a couple hours of bubbling it is delicious! Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing this recipe...i will definitely be trying this soon!Visit for more information on crock pot recipes
ReplyDeleteI made this tonight and it was awful. My daughter and I couldn't even choke it down. My husband wasn't the biggest fan but he sure ate it and I know he will be eating all the left overs. I wish I knew why it tasted so awful. Too much orange or something.
ReplyDeleteI made this a couple of days ago. It was a little too orangish for us!
ReplyDeleteI am eating this right now (literally)...I added broccoli, and some powdered garlic and ginger to it, as well as a little thai sweet chilli sauce; and it is excellent. I think the balance between the ginger and the orange turned out great!
ReplyDeleteit was yummy!! cut the orange concentrate a bit, i doubled the recipe and added like 10 oz, could've gone for less though. to answer about whether the chicken gets soggy- i don't really think it CAN get soggy? mine was great.
ReplyDeleteI used 4oz. (1/2c) of the orange juice concentrate and added 5 ground up Thai chilis to give it some heat. Instead of making it in the slow cooker, I cooked it in a cast iron pan on the stove until the sauce reduced and carmelized. Yum!
ReplyDeleteJust found this ..... definitely going to try it out! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteDef. Need to try this one! I love orange chicken!
ReplyDeleteLaura
http://lauraloves2shop.blogspot.com/
can anyone please tell me how many servings this makes? thanks
ReplyDelete@Kery,
ReplyDeleteThis serves 4-6 people.
Delicious, i cut back on OJ, added crushed red pepper and garlic.
ReplyDeleteI think I'll need to double this and put it on the menu for tomorrow, thanks so much for the idea! :)
ReplyDeleteI tried it today and my picky kids liked it. My son wanted a little more salt to it but over rice it came out fantastic and we will have it again. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteY'all never disappoint! We LOVED it!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not a fan of this recipe what so ever! I had to put it in the garbage disposal and order pizza instead!
ReplyDeleteIt was a good try, but did not taste anything like orange chicken. A little sad, but you live and you learn!
ReplyDeleteI found this on Pinterest! I couldn't wait to try it because I love Orange Chicken and it seemed so easy to make. I read through the above comments before I tried the recipe. The suggestions I followed were:
ReplyDeletemeasuring out 3/4 cup of the orange extract, then removing a tablespoon of it.
adding ginger. sounded yummy
also, I had to tweak it on my own since I realized I didn't have enough ketchup! So I used Bullseye Memphis-Style BBQ Sauce in place of ketchup. I used 4 Tbs. instead of 3.
With the addition of the ginger and the spices from the BBQ sauce, this chicken turned out amazing! I'm glad I removed that tablespoon of orange extract from the 6 oz. measurement, because this chicken is quite orange-y! Which can be a good thing, but I can see how it could be overpowering. Thanks for sharing!
Not Good!
ReplyDeleteNo eggs and no soy sauce (both allergies at our house). Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI can't find concentrate orange juice where I am living (S. Korea). So if I wanted to replace it with just regular orange juice, what would I do different?
ReplyDeleteadd a lil sugar to your juice and simmer it on low until it thickens, a concentrate is basically just condensing the juice... it will take about an hour of simmering for 1 cup of juive to condense down to a 1/4 cup...
DeleteI have tried to make this twice. Both times it burnt so badly it looked like tar. The first time I set the Crock Pot to 6 hours so the next time I set it to 10 and it still burnt up. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteIf I'm being honest I have to say this came out terribly. I'm a good cook too, so I don't believe it was any mistake on my part. The orange was more bitter than orange. This is the one and only dish that I have ever cooked for my family that literally went straight into the trash. My husband hasn't met anything he wouldn't eat (except this) and my 3 very non-picky eaters wouldn't touch it after their first bite...and I don't blame them!
ReplyDeleteI hate to say i had the same experience. I dont know what i could have done differently, i followed the directions precisely.
DeleteWe just threw it all in the garbage. I also followed the recipe precisely. I can't figure out what went wrong. Mine didn't even look like the picture.
DeleteME TOO! I was so looking forward to this, because I am an Orange Chicken LOVER. My husband ate it anyway (because he was starving-hungry after a long day at work), but he told me later - "It was pretty gross" - To me this tasted NOTHING like Panda Express Orange Chicken as promised. (And contrary to what some others have posted, I found it to not have *enough* orange. I've had better luck with a chicken broth & orange marmalade based sauce.
DeleteDisappointed! Too orangy and I even cut the OJ to 3/4 c. Decrease the oj by a ton and add garlic and pepper. Should taste better like that. I may try it again...
ReplyDeleteWe had this last night. I made it per the recipe and thought it was good, so did the hubby, but the toddler ate soooo much of it! We will try to add some red pepper flakes since we all like spicy.
ReplyDeleteI doctored the sauce up a lot (added soy sauce, rice vinegar, chili paste (a chinese red pepper sauce) and still felt like it was crazy orangey. Next time I would cut in half (or even a quarter!), or try just using 6 oz of regular orange juice instead of the frozen concentrated. It was still pretty yummy, but the overpowering, cloyingly sweet orange flavor was distracting.
ReplyDeleteAlso, if you're worried about the sauce being too runny you can always scoop out as much sauce as you can before serving and simmer on the stove top for 5-10 minutes to reduce. Add a little corn starch or flour to thicken even more if necessary.
ReplyDeleteMine did not turn out anything like your picture. Made the chicken like it stated, but I used panda expresses orange chicken sauce, and by the time we ate it all of e batter was,off of the chicken and in the sauce. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteHi Kris,
DeleteI am so sorry about that! I haven't come across that problem when I have made it. Rather than putting the chicken in just flour, you could try dipping the chicken in egg and then putting it in the flour to coat it better.
I made this tonight and had to come back and say how GOOOOOOD it was!
ReplyDeleteMy changes:
- I used orange juice from freshly squeezed tangerines because that was what I had
- I fired the chicken in a deep pan, added a teaspoon of cornstarch to the sauce mix, and tossed it in the pan as well. Simmer to thicken.
I bypassed the crock pot altogether. :D (I also used 5 chicken breasts. that was a perfect amount fo the sauce for us.)
This looks like it would be really easy and good. I was thinking of making it ahead of time and freezing it, then throwing it in the crockpot on the day we're going to have it. Does anyone think I should alter this in any way to make sure it comes out good. Is it a good idea to attempt to freeze it? Should I cook it all the way through and then freeze it and just reheat the day I want to eat it?? A lot of questions I know :) Just trying to bulk up on recipes that I can freeze and pull out to cook that are easy for when baby comes.
ReplyDeleteHi!
DeleteI haven't tried freezing it so I am not sure how it would work. I worry that the breading would be really soggy after being frozen and then thawing out. Let us know how it goes if you try it!
Ugh... Tried this tonight. Followed the recipe, and it was disgusting. The breaded chicken didn't even look anything like the picture nor the sauce. =( Disappointed.
ReplyDeleteSorry you didn't like it. The picture above is from the exact recipe. Guess it isn't for everyone!
DeleteThis is good with frozen lemonaide concentrate also, Lemon Chicken. My kids LOVE it over jasmine rice with sugar snap peas. Yumm!
ReplyDeleteSo....I feel like this needs to be said.
ReplyDelete6oz = 3/4 cup. Just an FYI for those of you that thought you put less orange juice and thought it was still to orangey.
Awful Awful Awful! I am an excellent cook and this recipe is not suitable to eat. In the trash it went. A good waste of chicken, orange juice, and my time.
ReplyDeleteI tried this today and it went horribly wrong. I used oj in a bottle, maybe that's why. After reading the comments here I realize I should have used the frozen concentrate (thought this was just a shortcut but guess its necessary). It turned into a floury gloppy mess.
ReplyDeleteThis was awful! Too much orange and I could really taste the vinegar.
ReplyDeleteMade this today with help from my four year old for a Bible study "bring food to share" dinner, I followed the recipe but used 5 chicken breasts, and doubled the sauce mix but used long life orange juice (not concentrate) and it was a hit everyone loved it, it didn't even have a strong vinegar or orange taste, will be using this recipe again :)
ReplyDeleteI used soy sauce instead of balsamic. I put siracha in it just a little like not even a teaspoon! I use half of the orange and add ground ginger I guess just fix it then the next time you make it ajust to what you like.
ReplyDeleteIf you say you're a good cook, you shouldn't throw it in the trash. Even if you didn't like it it's a simple recipe you should have no difficulty tweaking to your personal taste. I thought it was a good base, and added some fresh ginger, clove and some cayenne peppers to the mix and it was great. Thanks for the recipe!
ReplyDeleteAfter reading all of the comments, I have to say I'm a little scared to make this! Some people say its great, others say its terrible. Does anyone have any tips/tricks that might be helpful? So far I think I'm going to substitute soy sauce for the vinegar, use less orange juice and add red pepper. I'll for sure post how it turns out when I make it sometime this week.
ReplyDeleteI have this is the crock pot right now and I am excited! I ended up using the exact recipe (including the full 6 oz of OJ because we had A LOT of chicken) and I added 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder and 1/4 teaspoon of red pepper. I'll let you know how it turns out!
Deletedelish! used less oj concentrate, added a dash of garlic powder and red pepper flakes to taste (we like spicy). served over steamed jasmine rice, was a hit!
ReplyDeleteWe had this tonight and we liked it. However, I will reduce the orange juice, and add garlic next time. Maybe the dash of hot pepper too. Other than that, it was really good and looked just like the picture!
ReplyDeleteI just made this more my family the other night. I have to say the unfortunately, it wasnt a hit. It was WAY to sweet for us. I followed the recipe exactly, but it was so sweet, that my son commented it was like eating orange candy chicken. Sorry, I wont be making it again. :(
ReplyDeleteDid you use dark or light brown sugar? Because if you used dark, that'll add some extra sweetness. Second, try a little soy sauce or a little extra vinegar, and that should also help cut down on the sweetness!
DeleteThat photo is really deceiving IMO - the flour simply would NOT puff out when pan fried like that. You would have to tempura batter the pieces to get this texture. The crunchy exterior with the warm sweet sticky sauce is what makes this dish so good. Unfortunately this recipe doesn't deliver. The sauce was WAAAY to orange & my husband/daughter wouldn't even finish it. I tried adding red pepper flakes to spice it & some onions but that couldn't overpower the orange juice... I ate it but wouldn't give it a second chance sorry.
ReplyDeleteSorry you feel that way! I am not sure why yours didn't turn out like the picture as that is the exact recipe I used. Can't please everybody!
DeleteI didn't read through every comment,so I apologize if it's a duplicate question. Is there any reason that the brown sugar substitute or any sugar substitute wouldn't work? Need to cut the sugar for my diabetic husband.
ReplyDeleteHi! I have never tried a sugar substitute, so I am not sure how it would change the flavor. You'll have to let us know if you try it!
DeleteTried this recipe for the first time tonight. Didn't have to change a single thing--it was EXCELLENT. At first I thought it was going to be a little too sweet, with the OJ and the brown sugar (I used dark brown), but by the time it had all finished cooking, it was perfect. It might be a little sweet for some palates, but an extra dash of vinegar or maybe a tablespoon of soy sauce would fix that right up. I've tried many other recipes from your blog, including the cashew chicken, but this was the best yet. It's just me and my mom, so we have enough for both of us to have for lunch tomorrow! For anyone who is interested, we used an 8-pack of chicken thighs instead of breasts, and it came out just as good.
ReplyDeleteI am VERY excited to try this recipe... the whiners (which is what they are)that complain that they are such "great/amazing/accomplished" chefs obviously aren't. A simple recipe that isn't something you enjoy should be fairly simple to alter or fix. I am not a great chef or cook, but I am absolutely sure that if I follow this recipe as it has been written (with the suggestion of reducing the amt of orange juice)that I will be happy with the result.
ReplyDeleteIf your complaint is that the LOOK you get is different than the picture, think back to the last time you ever had a Big Mac that actually LOOKED like the commercial's depiction!???!?!?
Does anyone have a recipe for bourbon chicken, like they serve at the mall? And Somerset in Troy has the best. They serve it up with a red bean and rice and also glazed carrots! Yum! I want that rice recipe.
ReplyDeleteI am going to make this orange chicken! I will post how mine comes out.
Did you ever find a good recipe for mall bourbon chicken? They have some that I LOVE at the mall near my mom in Michigan, and I would love to be able to make it at home... Chinese food tastes NOTHING like it does up north :( (I'm in Texas, it's pretty gross here)
DeleteOk, I just made this. The flavor wasn't too bad. It does need a little tweaking. It was a little soggy however. I put it in the crock pot on high for 2 hours 45 minutes. Any tips on how to not make it soggy? Also, has anyone tried putting it in the oven? Would that work? I do want to try it again though! Great base recipe to play with!
ReplyDeleteI just made this in the oven last night and it turned out great.
DeleteI love this recipe! I feel like it's come out a bit dry the last few times I made it, so next time I will do half chicken thighs and half breasts and I might add more sauce. Great meal to freeze and reheat later!
ReplyDeleteI made this tonight and i only used 1/2 cup frozen orange juice and this came out awesome everyone loved it. Only issue in my opinion is chicken is soggy, also made home made lo mein noodles and it was yummy. Thanks will use recipe again.
ReplyDeleteI made this once, and thought it was OK. The second time, I used soy sauce instead of salt, reduced the OJ by about 1 third (and actually used pineapple-orange juice since that's what I had), and added garlic, ginger, & red pepper flakes. Success! Thanks for the idea.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your blog! thank you so much! I'm a stay at home mom to a 1 year old, and 4 month old, but i'm always looking for new easy recipes! I always look here first! Is it weird to want to me the "7th" sister! haha!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! A 1 year old AND a 4 month old?! You must have your hands full! Thanks so much for reading our blog. We would totally take you as a 7th sister. :)
DeleteI tried this recipe a few weeks ago because the kiddos LOVE Panda Express and we can't afford to eat there all the time. I had my 11 yo help... I don't know if we did something completely wrong, but our chicken didn't end up breaded at all! It had great flavor and my husband and I liked it, but the kids were disappointed when they saw it wasn't breaded. They were hoping for the same exact stuff from Panda! Any ideas as to what we did wrong? :(
ReplyDeleteHey Kayleigh!
DeleteI am so sorry about that. I haven't had a problem with that. A few of our readers said they had issues with this. We made some sweet and sour chicken tonight that uses cornstarch that was really breaded. You could try breading your chicken like that!
http://www.sixsistersstuff.com/2012/03/baked-sweet-and-sour-chicken-recipe.html
I have made this twice. Once in the crock pot, not good. The breading fell off and was soggy. The second time I made it, last night, I followed the directions for that recipe ^^^ with the orange chicken ingredients in the oven. MUCH better texture! It was crispy and gooey and yummy! I added lots of hot sauce plus strips of green pepper and carrots over rice. For people who are skeptical, following that recipe produces better results.
DeleteWhen I clicked on your blog for this chicken recipe something came across the screen with lots of ads and naked girls. Did you know about that?
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! That is terrible! I haven't had any problems with that, but we will definitely let the company who works with our marketing know. I am so sorry about that! Thanks for letting us know.
DeleteI made this last night, but I used less orange juice and added red pepper flakes. I thought it was pretty good, but my wife still thought it was too sweet. The breading turned out pretty much exactly as the picture showed though. I will probably try it again, but will make more changes so my wife will enjoy it too.
ReplyDeletei found this recipe on pinterest and was super excited. i loooove me some orange chicken from panda express! it's been going around on pinterest for a while, so i thought it would be awesome.
ReplyDeleteAWFUL. i mean, really, truly awful. it all went into the trash, and i never throw food away. the breading from the chicken all came off in the sauce, so the chicken was tough and the sauce was, well, just not right. the orange taste was so overwhelming and the texture was unbearable. i posted my disappointment on facebook and i had more than a dozen friends comment their similar experiences. overwhelming disappointment. we're thinking about starting a support group.
obviously it is working for some people, so maybe mentioning specific brands would be helpful? i followed the recipe exactly, as did many others.
No offense to whichever sister posted this recipe.... but just wanted to add my comment that I thought this was disgusting too. My husband told me it tasted like puke lol I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt this way. I'm not a spectacular cook, but I normally don't have any trouble following a recipe. Not sure what I did wrong :(
ReplyDeleteI made this tonight and it was great! I made a few changes, though, since I don't usually measure things out. Instead of OJ concentrate, I used some OJ that was already made. Also, I didn't have time to cook it in a slow-cooker, so I made it on the stove top with the heat set on it's lowest setting, for about an hour. The only thing I would have done differently is to add some sort of spice, like pepper flakes or something. My family loved it!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteSo surprised that there are negative comments on this recipe. I made it as written and it was fabulous. My non-chicken eating kids even gobbled it up with out be having to bribe them. I might try it in the oven next time though, just because crock pots smell a little funny to me and I prefer things slow cooked in the oven. Nothing wrong with the recipe!
ReplyDeleteI tried this recipe and LOVED it! Although I did make a few changes. I used 6 oz. OJ concentrate MINUS one or two tablespoons and it was perfect, not too orangy at all. I also skipped the vinegar and used soy sauce instead. I also threw in some garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes as many review suggested. I did not use a crock pot. I fried the breaded chicken on the stove and it came out perfectly, but it was a little time consuming. I also made the sauce on the stove and let it simmer until it reduced. I served this over steamed rice and it was delicious! I will definitely be making this again.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest cooking it on the stove and skipping the crock pot if you want the chicken crispy.
This recipe was so awesome! My husband loved it and ate it three days in a row. I followed the advice of some of your readers, switching it up a bit with some spices in the flour and sauce. I just posted my adaptation on my blog, (giving you credit of course)! Here's the link if you're interested:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.dreamingofwhitechocolate.com/2012/11/slow-cooker-chinese-orange-chicken.html
8/10 :)
ReplyDeleteThe sauce is delicious! (I used 3/4 c minus 1 T, with some garlic added)
My only problem is the loss of crisp due to the crockpot.
Not a terrible complaint though, I'm finishing off the leftovers as we speak!
It's been fun to read over the comments. Many have loved it and some have tossed it out! We're glad you tweaked it to your own taste! Thanks for your suggestions and have a great weekend! -The Six Sisters
DeleteMade this exactly as written for the hubby and we both love it, iv made it 3 times in the last 2 months!!
ReplyDeleteI am making this now and I think it is going to be a pretty good dish. I only added 1/2 cup of o.j., and extra teaspoon of brown sugar and ketchup to cut the bitterness of the Orange juice, a teaspoon of red pepper paste and a clove of minced garlic. The sauce is amazing! I also added fresh cracked black pepper and garlic salt when I browned the chicken. I'm excited to try this. Thank you for the recipe!
ReplyDeleteI am going to make a suggestion for all the complaints of the batter not sticking, I will be trying this recipe tonight but making a tempura for the chicken using ~ 1c flour, 1 egg and 1c ice water and blend lightly ~ I think I will by pass the crockpot and heat the sauce in a pan and toss the chicken just before serving. Not sure yet to remark on the sauce until after e try it :) but is sounds good enough to try!!
ReplyDeleteI tried this last night and it came out just like it was supposed to! This is a very good, simple recipe with all kinds of possibilities! I added the spices my wife and I prefer to the sauce and adjusted the taste before I poured it on the chicken. It still came out plenty "orangey" tasting for our tastes though. I think next time I'll try using some quality orange juice and add corn starch to it instead of using the concentrate... And I can't wait to try this recipe for lemon chicken! Easy, yet elegant. Bravo and Thank You for sharing.
ReplyDeleteJust finished eating this. Daughter loved it, I thought it was okay, and husband ate it but wasn't a fan of the "orange". I only wish it was crunchy like Panda Express orange chicken.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid of the batter falling off as some stated.. could this be done in the oven like your sweet and sour chicken recipe? :)
ReplyDeleteThe oven would work fine.
DeleteWe DID NOT enjoy this. Chicken was way over cooked...on low for 5hrs. We all thought it tasted like ribs. I might try it again but cooking it in the oven. :(
ReplyDeleteMade this today and can't say I loved it. Ate it for dinner as that was all I had but throwing the remainder out. The chicken wasn't really battered despite being rolled and seared with the flour. I actually thought the sauce didn't have enough orange flavor. I would agree with Kelly that it almost had a BBQ-flavor-note to it. I couldn't even describe the taste if I wanted to but it was not enjoyable. Had the slow cooker on lowest setting and it was boiling within 4 hours; chicken dried out and somewhat burnt. I have been really looking forward to making this for a long time so was disappointed. :(
ReplyDeleteMine looks exactly like the picture, and I made the following changes (based on reading these reviews): only used 1/4 c. + 2 T of OJ concentrate, used 1/2 T of soy sauce instead of salt, used 2 T of BBQ sauce and 1 T ketchup instead of 3 T of ketchup, added about a 1/4 t of ground ginger and 1/2 t of garlic powder AND it was done after 1 1/2 hours on low. Yum!
ReplyDeleteBeing so excited about this recipe i jumped to making it and to my mistake did not read the comments first. I had no issues with the batter but the sauce concoction was water and way too orange juicy. I used an off brand orange juice which was horrible. The chicken was edible and the family did enjoy it but I will definitely not be making this again. I love orange chicken from normal Chinese food places and this was definitely not it. Very disappointed
ReplyDeleteEven though I read the comments above, I still had very high hopes for this. I am not a picky eater, but there was just something wrong with this recipe. I don't think the orange was too strong, it just tasted very weird, like it didn't belong. It's also not crispy and I cooked mine on low and it was done in two hours. My kids didn't like it....jus
ReplyDeleteI've had this recipe book marked for weeks now. Actually, it's even been on the menu for weeks, but every day that I had planned to make it I forgot to thaw the chicken and/or get it ready early enough. Today is the day though! It's actually in the oven right now rather than the slow cooker. But I followed the same process. I tasted the sauce after I made it and it was amazing as is, but I also added some spices and hot sauce and that's great too! And I had no problem with the breading. It's nice and thick and browned. Thank you for sharing this fabulous recipe! I can't wait for my husband to get home from work so we can enjoy this fabulous dinner!
ReplyDeleteI tried this today as we also love orange chicken -OMG! it was way too orangey. i think if you used 1/2 the amount of OJ it would be perfect. My husband ususally eats everything, he could only eat a few bites.
ReplyDeleteI made the fried rice recipe you have, it was very good, although I added a touch more soy than your recipe as we like it
I made this yesterday and it tasted AWFUL, my husband rated it a 0 out of 10 and that never happens. I did everything that the recipe said except I had to substitute malt vinegar instead of balsamic vinegar but I don't know if that was the problem. It just tasted so strong of orange that it tasted like we were eating an orange peel, it was really bad.
ReplyDeleteThis was horrible. It tasted like I was eating orange peel and the chicken is super dry.
ReplyDeleteI even added a few extra things that orange chicken normally has in it and it gets a 0 for us too. And we LOVE LOVE LOVE orange chicken. My cats went to town on it though. But I definitely wouldn't recommend this.
I agree with all of the other comments this recipe needs a lot of tweaking. I only used 4 ounces of orange juice instead of 6 so the flavor of the sauce was really good....but the chicken was a soggy mess! I will bypass to crock pot all together next time and try baking this in the oven.
