I always loved coming home from school when it was a rainy day, because that meant Mom made cookies! These were one of her favorites and are my favorite snickerdoodle recipe. And they don't need cream of tartar, so you can make them with ingredients you already have in your pantry!
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Mix thoroughly:
1 stick (1/2 cup) margarine
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
Mix in:
3 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
Chill dough for about 30 minutes. Roll into balls the size of small walnuts. In a separate bowl, mix 2 Tbsp sugar with 2 tsp cinnamon (more or less depending on how you like it). Roll dough balls in cinnamon mixture.
Place about 2" apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake 7-9 minutes until lightly browned, but still soft.
Makes about 5 dozen.

what is a cube of margarine?
ReplyDeleteSo sorry- it was supposed to be say stick of margarine (or 1/2 cup). I changed it now! Thanks for letting us know!
ReplyDeleteI made these cookies last night and they were absolutely delicious. I can't wait to try out more of your recipes. Thanks for sharing them!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I make snickerdoodles I skip the chilling part, drop by rounded teaspoon and sprinkle with cinnamon/sugar. Even though they're not perfectly round, it's faster, less messy, and they taste just the same.
ReplyDeleteI love love love Snickerdoodles...probably my favorite cookie! I pinned this recipe on Pinterest and I cannot wait to make them!
ReplyDeleteCan you use butter instead of margarine ? And no cream of tarter?
ReplyDeleteHi Ashley!
DeleteButter would work fine instead of margarine. And no cream of tartar! :)
I wondered about the cream of tartar, too.
ReplyDeleteHi Dana,
DeleteNo cream of tartar! It is one of the only snickerdoole recipes I have seen that doesn't use it, but they are delicious!
Just made these for a little neighbor boy for his 7th birthday (he said that Snickerdoodles were his favorite cookie). They turned out fantastic and were super easy! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteWe just moved and I made this as a snack to eat while we were unpacking and my family loved them. My mom is begging me to send her the recipe. :) I'm making them again this week... They are that good!
ReplyDeleteSo, I bake at 350?
ReplyDeleteRight above the ingredients it says heat oven to 400. Hope this helps! Have a great weekend! -The Six Sisters
DeleteIs there any substitute for the shortening?
ReplyDeleteMargarine is a substitute for shortening. You could use that.
